The issue is that the new owner has not yet reprogrammed the Vesper AIS on the old boat. It shows up on MarineTraffic as the old boat, American flagged, with same radio call sign and MMSI #. I've had several friends over the year see it, and email me to ask if we're back in Oz!!!..........
I am assuming the NOAA has "un-documented" your old boat - correct???

Who issued the MMSI - FCC or NOAA or some other identity ????

Who is responsible for advising MMSI provider of the sale?

If the vessel is really no longer USA documented yet shows up on MarineTraffic as such, then someone somewhere has not done their job.

Maybe that someone is you or maybe it is some government entity. Track down who is responsible and get it sorted out!

Don't think the FCC has any jurisdiction in Oz. I rather like your cruise missile approach, though. Good to be thinking about social distancing options!!!

Wouldn't have mattered.....there's already a "same name" II documented in the US. Unlike Canada, it's perfectly legal in the US to document multiple boats with identical names.....for better or worse!

I think the problem (so he's told me) is that it's expensive to get the radio license in Oz. He says he bought a new EPIRB and he didn't need a license to license that, but isn't using the HF radios, and can't (doesn't want to) pay just to get MMSI # for his AIS transponder, when it works for other boats to see him as is.

If there's a change in country, then them MMSI would/should change, but one could at least udpdate the info for the old MMSI so the owner info would at least be correct (and non-duplicate), even if a different country.

You then get a new MMSI/Callsign for your new boat, problem solved. Even if they still have the same name, they will have unique digital identities.
I have already got new MMSI/Callsign for new boat. And I can't change the country info on the old one.

He's got to get the new MMSI/Callsign on his end w/ the Australian authorities.

My problem is that whatever I do on my end, he will still be using the transponder with it's old info. Showing up on other ship's displays, and MarineTraffic. Ah well.....

Old boat was indeed officially "undocumented" when we sold her. It doesn't change the way it shows up on MarineTraffic (or other ship's AIS displays) if the new owner is still using it without reprogramming the transponder.

I guess if I'm not incurring any liability in case of a collision, it's just the annoyance factor.....I can get over it !!!

I might be missing sometime here but AFAIK, MMSI can't be transferred between countries. So if you sold the boat and it now "undocumented", the MMSI should also be cancelled - maybe by you or maybe some US government body. I know this won't change what appears on the MarineTraffic.

When I wanted to cancel an Australian issued MMSI, the government body (AMSA) wanted to know who now owned the programmed equipment to ensure the new owners reprogrammed the MMSI. AMSA was going to contact the new owners to advise them of their obligations to have the equipment reprogrammed.

So I'm thinking you need to contact whoever issued your MMSI and request it to be cancelled (on the grounds the boat is no longer in the USA) and advise them who the new owner is. Maybe they will contact the new owner to remind them of their obligations.

Dunno if it will help though!
