Cheapest fruits - provisions in Caribbean?

I wonder where is the cheapest to buy groceries and general provisions in Caribbean ?
Finding fruits have been quite challenging.

Currently in Martinique , resting before continue south .
The question is not about a specific island or super market but in general where someone can find the cheapest .
In Martinique is weird to see high prices on local products , in Dominica fruits can be acquired even for free , Guadeloupe is a bad place for provisions .

Re: Cheapest fruits - provisions in Caribbean?

Mangoes are very cheap in Haiti. First time there I bought a dozen of the largest mangoes I ever saw for $1.00. Later when we were adopted (for a fee) by a local boy as guide, translator and general helper he told us tourists pay too much, give him the dollar and he would go get them.

Gave him the dollar and he disappeared. Since the market was only two blocks away we figured he absconded with our dollar. Then about two hours later we saw him walking around the far side of the harbor with another boy. He showed up with a gunny sack full of mangoes, paid the other boy for carrying the sack, tipped himself for doing the job and gave us back the change from the dollar.

Bananas were just slightly more. Coconuts relatively expensive.

Pandanus is free. But it makes your mouth itch. I’ve seen it in Jamaica not sure where else it grows.

I’m not sure the pandas approve of you chewing on their butts

Interesting.
I thought pandanus’ were mostly limited to the atolls of Polynesia and Micronesia, so glad to be enlightened.

Big mobs of pandanus species.

The pandan fruits in Polynesia don't cause scratchy throat.

I tried to eat the fruits of the species on the NE Australian coast and failed (but the seeds are likely edible if roasted).

A most interesting Pandanus species is found in SE Asia. Not much if any trunk unless v old. And I've never seen it flower or fruit. It's grown for its fragrant leaves - which are used for colouring and flavouring in pastries and glutinous sweets (kuih) of various kinds through maritime and continental SE Asia, and the leaves are used to scent rooms and automobiles (boats too!) with the local myth (or truth, who knows?) that the scent or the presence of the drying leaves chases cockroaches away. Pandanus amaryllis, I think. Called duan pandan = pandan leaf in Malay (which is just another member of the Malayo-Polynesian language family).

I've been on one Caribbean island (I've forgotten - perhaps Jamaica) where an ancient Pandanus tree was growing. V impressive size. That was a few decades back. I assumed at the time that it had been introduced (along with breadfruit etc) back in the slave labour era.
