Newbie in New York City

Hi!

I am a young man working full time in manhattan and curious to hear expert advice on what it is like living aboard a sailboat year round here, the winters being the primary concern. Eventually sailing it elsewhere as well next year. I would also love to hear basic advice on what size and year sail boat would be great to start out on. I am only experienced with lake ski/wakeboard boats (so not very much experienced at all) BUT very serious about taking the plunge so wanted to hear from the experts! I appreciate the time!

I'm not sure there are many marinas that allow liveaboards.

I've seen eBay boat ads claiming reasonably priced liveaboard slips.

Maybe out toward Rockaway?

Saw YTs from a guy living for a while at anchor off the west 79th St boat basin, midtown Manhattan but dunno how long you can stay there.

City Island may have options. . .

Thinking city island however many marinas have been bought over the years by developers. There is also a small place off the hutch I’m the Bronx.....

Some friends and I were living aboard on a 39' in Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken 2010-11. Rent was $600/mo with a yearlong least and a great view of midtown from the docks. Nice little eclectic community of liveaboards and waterfront park with summer concerts right down the road. If it's not condofront property by now, that would be a good choice.

Not familiar with the area, but maybe first find marinas thet allow liveaboards... and then go have a look at various example boats, chat with some of the folks, talk to the marina, etc.
