Morgan 41 Model Date

I am looking at a Morgan 41 this weekend, that has been abandoned at a marina, and the marina is trying to recoup some lost slip fees.....meaning it will not be expensive realitive to what I am seeing on used Morgans. Obviously I will have it surveyed, but the question I have is..... is there a way to tell the model year from a number or designation I can find on the boat? Based upon appearance of the pics I have seen, I feel it is mid to late 80's....probably after Catalina bought them. I am going to take specs of several year's Morgans with me, but that is only good if I am able to identify what year it is actually from, when I get to the boat.

I knew if any group could help me, it would be this one.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: Morgan 41 Model Date

There's a HIN number stamped into the stern of the boat on starboard side towards the top. This is different than the CG documentation number. I forget the legend for what all the various numbers of the HIN mean but it tells you the year the boat was manufactured (I believe it's the last 2 numbers).

Look for soft decks (water intrusion) and internal water damage from leaky ports/hardware bedding due to poor maintenance over the years.

Correct on the first part, and ABSOLUTELY check the decks for saturation! M41 is notorious for poor maintenance and soggy decks.

Re: Morgan 41 Model Date

Easy way to tell if its a Catalina Morgan is look for a fin keel. At some point Catalina redesigned the underbody to modernize it. but the HIN at the top of the starboard transom will start with MRY its a Morgan Morgan.

At this point its at least a 30 year old boat so if there are a few soft spots in the deck I would not even blink. Most boats have some issues by this age.

Is it a Morgan 41, or an Out Island 41.

Re: Morgan 41 Model Date

my hull ID is MRY...76A. that means Morgan built in 1976. If no plate on the transome ask to see the state rgistration. It may be on that. Morgans are generally well built but a lot can go wrong over 40 years.

Sailed a Morgan 41 OI for 7 years back in the late 70's. It sails like a power boat and powers like a sail boat but is a stable platform with lots of space and was great to learn on.

Re: Morgan 41 Model Date

Thanks for every ones help.....it is in the water, so I can't check the keel. I have chartered a couple of Morgan's in the Caribbean back in the 90's....(mid 70's boats) and this has different lines.....Catalina influence I am sure.

I will check the stern for the number indicating the date. Before I take this on, I will check everything thoroughly and have it surveyed. In the time I have been on this site, I have learned a lot about old boats....and continue to learn. There are a lot of "good" old boats out there.....you just have to find them.

The Morgalina has a u shaped galley and never is a ketch and has alloy ports.

It definitely has alloy ports....2 of which are taped over, so I assume are leaking.

Re: Morgan 41 Model Date

The OI41-5 was built from 1975 t0 1981.

The OI41-6 with the taller ketch rig sailed much better. 1981 to1985.

The Morgan Classic or Morgalina was of much lighter build ( 4000 lbs lighter)
and was built by Catalina from 1986 to 1991. It had a long fin keel with a
skeg rudder and also had a U-shaped galley.

Re: Morgan 41 Model Date

Funny, a similar-size Morgan was abandoned at our marina, and sold to recoup fees, too. As I recall the buyer got a pretty good deal. I went through the boat (taking pictures for the ad) and didn't notice any water damage.

Re: Morgan 41 Model Date

Owned a Catalina Morgan Out Islander with a couple other people, purchased new. Kept it at the Moorings private dock in Roadtown, Tortola. Great live aboard. As far as sailing, all I can say is, “ready to come about? Start the engine! Let’s tack.”
