Surveyor in Brisbane area

Potentially looking for a surveyor in the Brisbane (Australia) area to review an older Granger cat. (Fiberglass and epoxy over foam sandwich construction), some time before the middle of next week (report provided before EoB Wednesday 8/14.

Fore and Aft on this forum is a surveyor. He's based in Gympie, but might be willing to travel.

Re: Surveyor in Brisbane area

Thanks 44cruising cat I do travel thats for sure. I was in Fiji in June surveying a Leopard and Lagoon cat, thats about as far as I have traveled to do a job.
Next weeks no good for me I am booked solid. Funny enough the first boat I am doing on Monday is a 44' strip planked cedar cat, then a good old Fastback in the afternoon.
Geoff Cruse is a good surveyor and certainly knows his stuff.

Cheers

The location of the vessel is being fairly tightly held, but I suspect that it's north of Brisbane but south of the Sunshine Coast. Figure about 100km one way to get to it. I've contacted you out of band.

Give Barry Colson a call, he's a Naval Architect as well as a Marine Surveyor. I ran a Yacht Brokerage in Scarborough for 11 years and used Barry more than any other Surveyor. His contact is 0417 606 352.

Re: Surveyor in Brisbane area

RickAlexander I clicked on your website and are having trouble believing you only charge $14 a foot? I notice you claim to be a master shipwright but you do not mention where you did your time? I also see you do not mention what professional marine surveyors organisation you belong to? You talk about a Marine Surveyors Club, but I could not find it on the net?
I was at a marine Surveyors conference last week with 50 other marine surveyors and no one was charging less than $20 a foot. You think someone would have mentioned this Club you are talking about?
I surveyed a Fastback 32 today for $640. Your costing is $450, for me there was 2 hours travel, 3 hours on the cat then 3 hours report writing (12 pages). Which works out to $56 an hour at your rate. That’s not a lot if you have pay indemnity insurance, public liability, superannuation, other overheads and then my wage. In comparison my wife Tina makes $25 an hour working in a plant nursery. She just turns up does her job and goes home. I might have to join her if you start working up my way.
Cheers

Re: Surveyor in Brisbane area

The way I understood Rickalexander’s website he charges $500.00 for vessels up to 36ft plus travelling. So in the case of the Fastback 32 $500.00 for 6hrs work plus travelling $83.37 per hour. If I am wrong and his charge is $450.00 plus travelling then $75.00 per hour.
A lot of Australians would say good money but of course we don’t know what the overheads are and how regular the jobs are.
$20.00 per foot isn’t very good money if you are only averaging 3 or 4 surveys per week.
Well worth it if the surveyor finds problems and you are able to negotiate a lower price and if he doesn’t find any problems then peace of mind makes it worthwhile especially for people who have little experience with boats.
A few months ago I flew to Queensland to look at a 57ft yacht. I spent 7 hours over two days checking it and would have liked another couple of days going over it. The cost to me with airfares accomodation and hire car was over $2000.00 so a survey at $20.00 per foot is cheap compared to the other costs incurred, so long as you get a competent surveyor. :

Re: Surveyor in Brisbane area

Hi again From Rick thanks for replies there are a few corrections to what both surveyors have said about my website I suggest you all go and have a look and make your own judgements. I will say I have 44years experience in the marine survey and shipwright sectors I have Built more than more than 400 vessels 250 of these i built the interiors for all seawind catamarans produced before 2007 and have sailed quite a few miles on them. So as to the club the Marine Survey Club is for owners of private vessels
not surveyors. Conditions Apply for the rates QUOTED there. I will have the Marine Survey Club page up and running again tomorrow. You can phone me on 0427822852 to join the club and receive the discounts on surveying. Cheers

Over how many hundreds of years?

You may have worked at a factory that made them but you could not have personally built them.

Re: Surveyor in Brisbane area

hi simi 60 I was putting up some of my experience i said i built the interiors or did you overlook that. They actually built 416.you know it feels weird to stand on a dock in venice and look at a boat you had a hand in and be proud of it. I did not put my website name up again it is aaacheapermarinesurveying.com. the MARINE SURVEY CLUB is there. I have used the interiors as a recomendation for my skills as a shipwright the 1160 won best interior at the New York Boat show, and the whitsunday cat hire used them for full size advertising at the Sydney International boat show a few years back. My passion is wooden yacht restoration and sailing them. cheers.:

By your reckoning, I built the Auckland hospital during my holidays as a university student.
