Chartering Catana 47 - Any tips?

Hi, I've chartered a variety of Lagoons, FPs and Balis, but never a Catana and I have an upcoming charter on a Catana 47. This will be the first time sailing with daggerboards and a more performance oriented cat.

Any tips or tricks I should be aware of? I'm particularly interested in anything related to the daggerboards and the gennaker.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I guess you would want to keep your windward daggerboard down and leeward up. Idea is to prevent tripping over your dagger board. Get them both up going downwind.

Re: Chartering Catana 47 - Any tips?

Hello,
As a C47 owner I do the following:
When going to windward 38-50° AWA:
boat speed 0-5kn, both boards 100% down.
boat speed 5-7kn, both boards 75% down.
boat speed >7kn, both boards 50% down
Max boat speed at 40°AWA is around 9kn.

If choppy conditions I raise them a bit earlier. The risk is not tripping the cat, but to brake the boards.
Both boards should be set symetrically and you might need to luff (25-30° AWA) a bit to lower the water pressure on them before adjusting. Especially if saling thight and faster than 6-7kn.

50-180° AWA: both boards fully raised. If the wind is light and boat speed low, I keep them down until 60°AWA to reduce leeway. In high following seas I lower them 30-50% to help the autopilot.

When anchoring or manouvering in thight quarters with some wind, I always put the boards down. Sometimes I keep them down at anchor to limit the cat to swing. She will stay in the wind like a monohull.

This might seem like a lot of hassel but in fact most of the time I set them once and this small effort makes the sailing so much more pleasant.

While motoring one day in very flat seas I totaly lowered both boards to messure the loss of speed, only 0,1kn.

Enjoy the ride.

Re: Chartering Catana 47 - Any tips?

Hi again,
As for the gennaker, which is actually a light genoa on furler on the Dream Yacht Charter boats:
Fully deployed from 45-140° AWA up to 15kn AWS. This sail is like a turbo and will get your boat speed close to 80% of AWS, depending on AWA.
For exemple 9kn AWS/90°AWA = 7kn of boat speed.
If the wind increase above 15kn AWS, use the smaller genoa.

Between 140-180°AWA I often use only the gennaker. No main sail, but still doing very relaxing 7-8kn in the tradewinds.
If in a hurry, wing to wing with the smaller genoa. The genoa sheet should then be led to the gennaker stand-up block for a better sheeting angel.

If you want to go wing-to-wing with the mainsail you should use the padeye on the sidedeck to attach the the mainsail sheet block snap shackel, acting as a preventer.

Chablis 1, thank you so much for the info. That really helps a lot.

What is your typical reefing schedule for the boat?
