B&G 4G not find plastic buoys

Hi all.

My wife and I are out "boating" this week, in Nova Scotia. We launched last fall, and haven't had much time with the radar, but have thus far been disappointed in it's performance.

Our old radar, on the old boat, was a JRC 1500. It saw buoys, birds, and you name it. We could watch the buoys on radar, going past the boat, at very close distances. It was a nice unit.

This radar, however, has not been able to find the round mooring buoys, only 100m off our beam. We've been anchored next to a mooring field since yesterday, and haven't been able to spot these buoys yet. The other boats show up fine, and fishing buoys aren't quite terrible, but these plastic, round, buoys don't show at all. Some of them have seagulls on them, and they don't show either. And I don't see flocks of birds, as I did on our old JRC.

I've played with every adjustment on the Zeus3 12" display, but I still can't see the buoys. This ain't my first rodeo, but it is the first time on this bull (more like a cow).

Is there an update, or something I've missed? How can I update this unit?

Anyone out there able to tell me, from experience, that they can see plastic mooring buoys? I did a fair amount of research, and everyone seems so pleased. "I can see people walking on my own bow!" I've heard. Well, this radar is mounted 6 feet above the deck, at 6 feet above the water, and I can't see a buoy at 100m. It works fine for most hard returns, I just can't see these buoys (about 60cm around).

Cheers.
Paul.

My furuno can see everything , birds , sea turtle backs , seal heads ...

Your radar is a bit low down

You must talk with Band G

Re: B&G 4G not find plastic buoys

Thanks, I think so too. Radar is on a temporary mount. We won't have the mast until next month, so made a mount for the trip from PEI to NS. It's low, but really should work for this stuff. I suppose it could be the secondary lobe interfering with the radar, and it's cancelling the buoys out, I don't know.

We were going to mount it on the mast, but it's going to force compromises with the jib (self tacker), so we've decided to put it on a pole, aft. I've seen others (Morgan's cloud) at about 7 feet above deck (not B&G) and he says it works great.

Agreed about birds, and seal heads. My old JRC didn't miss anything.

Thanks for your feedback.
Paul.

Re: B&G 4G not find plastic buoys

We're doing a coastal trip today. It was -10C, and we saw birds on the radar, standing on the sheet ice, when leaving the anchorage. But we didn't, after leaving harbour, see the fishing pots buoys.

I guess I can excuse missing the foam buoys, as there are 1 foot waves at the moment, which are larger than the pots, so the radar is hiding all that.

I'm still not happy with missing an entire mooring field, in calm water.

I'd hate to sell the 4g, to buy another radar, if I don't have to. We bought it because it was supposed to be the best, for close in work, but it's not proving itself to be so.

You may see it listed here later...

More testing to come.

Cheers.
Paul, in Nova Scotia. Self isolating on the boat, and on our way to Lunenburg.

Re: B&G 4G not find plastic buoys

I don’t know anything about B and G

Furuno has a commissioning protocol

These commissioning menus are typically only known to service technicians

Was your radar commissioned by a technician ?
