1979 Ericson 34T - 8k is it worth it?

Friends husband passed away last year and she wants the boat gone. 1979 Ericson that needs some TLC. The biggest thing I saw was that Someone fell on a stanchion and popped it through the deck. Im sure there are other soft spots but did not find any on the first check. For the age I’m not totally surprised.

She sails and the engine runs. It’s actually a newer refurbished engine that was put in a year ago and has 400 hours on it. For the most part all systems go but you know it needs some work.

So all being said and with only some scraps, is it even worth it? Would you even consider it?

Was the deck repaired immediately after the stanchion was knocked out? Has the boat been in covered storage since the stanchion was "popped through the deck" ? If not, there will have been water intrusion into the hull every time it's rained since. At the very least, there would have been condensation and seeping. Then if you're in an area with Winter, the expansion and contraction of whatever amount of intruded water with freezing and thawing.

You'll need a surveyor to tell you the true state of the hull before you'll have a clear idea of what she's worth. Otherwise, it would just be the resale value of the relatively new engine and boat parts.

Hope it's not as bad as all that! I'm just trying to offer you a pragmatic approach.

Good luck!

The damage happened this past week during a sea trial. The vessel is in Florida where it’s getting rained on every day. There would need to be water seeping in from before to soften everything up enough for this to happen

The rest of the boat looked ok and it sailed in a good breeze but it’s probably more trouble than it’s worth.

All boats have their ongoing projects. Rebedding stanchions is a fairly common one. If it gets fixed soon (as you say) there wouldn't have been much water intrusion.

Ericsons were pretty good boats back then and lovely sailers. The 1979 era means the the fibreglass was created using the "good" resin before the recipe changed in 1980/81.

Of course, it's your call, but it doesn't sound like a write-off. Just get that staunchion base fixed right quick! (But I might offer $4,000-$5,000 - or less - i.e. whatever the Winter storage fees would be).

Fair winds,
