outboard motor in Caribbean

Considering purchase of Mercury 9'9 hp, Good idea in the Caribbean considering future need of parts? Tohatsu and yamaha motors seem in short supply these days

Re: outboard motor in Caribbean

Sometimes you can get "mercury" parts when you can't find tohatsu parts and vise versa.
Just as long as you have the right part number (and don't tell them its for the other name motor) then you are good to go.
Always good to have the pdf of the parts list(s) on hand before going to the store to buy parts.

Re: outboard motor in Caribbean

I did not like my Mercury 9.9. I could not get used to the in-the-handle shift. Either it would not shift, I could not find the shift/start position or it would go from forward into reverse at awkward moments like coming alongside another vessel or dock.
I picked up a two-cycle 15hp Yamaha in the Bahamas and love it for the quick toque to get out of the "hole" and on plain. The counter to the toque is the increased gas consumption. I have no experience with the 4 stroke 15hp Yamaha. I believe Yamahas have an excellent reputation for not needing parts, fairly reliable, just remember to emptly the fuel bowl if storing the motor so the gas does not gum up the jets.

Re: outboard motor in Caribbean

YAMAHA "ENDURO"-2 stroke is the most dependable outboard I have ever owned.
Just add oil and they run forever.
Not sold in us or usvirgins, available everywhere else
