Question Boat flag/registration and staying in the Mediterranean

Thank you for allowing me to join and ask questions from experienced sailors.

My husband and I have spent the last 3 weeks in Europe looking at boats to buy. We have found a secondhand Bavaria 37 and will do the survey on it on Wednesday.

Maybe we should have found all of this information out before now - but being so new to sailing, we didn't even think about it. You don't know what you don't know!

We are Australian, and have found the boat we like in Croatia. We plan to berth it in Croatia and we would like to spend 9 months of the year in Croatia getting sailing experience and eventually live aboard full-time traveling the world.

1. What country would we be recommended to register the boat? Pros and Cons

2.How could the visa situation work out? We have just read we cant stay longer than 30 days out of 180 days.

3. What country should we get the boat insured in?

Wisdom from experienced sailors would be most welcome.

Re: Boat flag/registration and staying in the Mediterranean

There's another thread (can't find it right now sorry) about Australian registration. I think the consensus was that Australian citizens must register their boat as Australian.

Re: visa, another thread explains some more options for antipodeans with some special rules for extra visa time in some countries.

If you go Australian registration, you may find (like we did) that you must go with an Australian insurer. We're with Topsail and are happy (so far!).

(we found our boat in the Caribbean, registered her in Australia and insured as well, and she is now in the UK).
