Building a small boat navigation system

I've been trying to think of a project to do with my 12 y.o. son that we would both be interested in doing. He is very into his screens and videogames where I am more of a hands on, doing things, mechanical type of person. He is interested in the field of video game design and e-sports. I am building a 12 foot boat in the living room. We can both sail but he doesn't like it near as much as I do. So I thought a very interesting project we could do would be to create a navigation system using a Rasberry Pi as the brain. In this way I could help him learn some basics of programming and computer stuff (about which I'm pretty clueless) and at the same time learn a bunch of new stuff myself. I may even trick him into enjoying the water more . Obviously we are at the very beginning of this endeavor. Basically don't know anything. He has a Pi from a computer camp he went to and that's about it. I was hoping some of the more electronics/programming savvy folks here could get us started with some resources and maybe a couple pointers. Any direction would be much appreciated.
