2019 Yamaha 30hp No water from outboard tell-tale

Hello all,


I am running out of Ideas on a 2019 Yamaha 30hp outboard with no water squirting out the telltale. The engine is 6 months old. I checked the impeller and looks brand new. I took out the thermostat with no change. I checked all the hoses and everything seams to be connected with no leaks.


Am I missing something? I am in the Philippines where warranty service is almost non existent.

I know this sounds crazy, but take a paperclip or any small rigid thing and gently insert it into the outlet the water usually comes out of. Many times a little chunk of salt will accumulate and block the tell tale water flow.

I had a Honda that had this. Removed tell tale hose from block to where it squirts. Reamed it out with a coat hanger. Worked perfect. Probably some salt that is blocking it

Yep. I use a piece of stiff leader monofilament myself, happens maybe every other year.
Almost all outboards the water tell tale comes off of the pump before the powerhead, so it’s not an indicator that there is water flow thorough the engine, just indicates the pump is working.

If it stops working pull the cover off and feel the power head, if it’s just warm and not hot and you have been running awhile your OK until you can rod it out.

Happens occasionally to me, I keep a tie wrap handy to poke in the telltale. So far this had solved the problem.

If the clearing of the water tell tale solves the problem as posted above ....... then the next step is prevention is better than cure
If you are not going to use your outboard for a over a week then flush it with fresh water and if you can get a solution dispenser into the flush kit as well to dissolve the salt build up that is even better. If you cant get the salt off solution then use white vinegar dilluted 30:70 to water remove the salt build up and you should not have the problem again

Serious issue, run it for more than 10 minutes and you will seize the engine,,,,,,pull the tube and pour vinegar in it, let sit overnight. If still not working, backflush with compressed air at low pressure. The pee tube is the mechanical idiot light

I had the same problem with my Yamaha f4. I removed the lower unit to expose the impeller housing. The empeller was worn but not broken. But I found broken rubber pieces from I imagine two or three services ago. Removed them and it worked fine. Good luck.

thanks for everyone's input. we found the culprit. it was a warn out shaft bushing in the lower unit. seams strange it would wear out so fast as the engine only has 80 hours on it.
