Useful books list
Hi all
Another newbie question. My getting afloat plans are upside down due to the current situation and i will be left learning much on the way rather than gaining experience before setting out and research material that will come with me would be helpful.
I started out looking for a book mentioned in these forums for global route planning bible. Then one for navigation, then i guess there is a whole shelf of great information to consume while waiting for wind or resting.
What paper books would you guys recommend?

Re: Useful books list
The one you were referring to is Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes...

Re: Useful books list
And maybe one you haven't thought of: Nigel Calder's Diesel Engine Maintenance (if you have a diesel engine - and if it's not one of the new common-rail versions).

Anything by Nigel Calder. Amazon has them all; go browsing.
Charlie Wing's Boatowner's Illustrated handbook of wiring
Bowditch. You can download it free on the internet.

Re: Useful books list
Good tips! I guess i will need one for general sailing issues, info like the recent great post about trimming the boat and sails to correct steering issues etc.
I am a seaman and so have ok general knowledge but not for sail specific.

Re: Useful books list
For getting into the general sailing theme, Steve Dashew’s “Circumnavigator’s Handbook” provides some good background.

Re: Useful books list
- Where there is no Doctor (free download do a google search)
- The complete riggers apprentice, Brion Toss
- Modern Marine Weather, David Burch
- Introducing Oceanography, David N. Thomas
- Any of Cap'n Fatty Goodlander's books (some of the most sensible cruising writing in existence
- Electronic Chart Navigation, David Burch
- Handling storms at sea, Hal Roth
- The complete yachtmaster, Tom Cunliffe
- Boatowner's Mechanical Electrical Manual, Nigel Calder. For electrics though you are better off with Charlie Wing's books as Calders ideas are a bit odd
- Boatowner's Illustrated Electrical Handbook, Charlie Wing
- The boat data book, Richard Nicolson
- Don Casey has several good titles too
- Ocean passages of the World, Admiralty publication NP136 (get the 1973 edition)
Cruising guides for where you are going, there is usually not much choice so get them all
I don't rate Jimmy Cornell's books. They are expensive rehashes of freely available data and the "Ocean Passages of the world" is a much better reference. As I mentioned get the 1973 edition as it comes with rather nice charts.
John Vigor's writing is very nice and he has some nice little books of tips and tricks.
