My fully restored SR25 cutter is coming on the market this May located in Seattle. It is truly turnkey and ready to go. No expense was spared in this build. I can help load it up for shipment.

i recently bot a Cross 24 trimaran. Modified to be a daysailer with daggerboard. She floats high, cuz she's lightened. Square top fully battened main, jib on a club and traveler, - maybe 7/8 fractional rig. No backstay, nor cud she have a standing backstay cuz of the square top and battened main. Thinking about running backstays in dynema. Can i add a tang to the mast? Where shud the chainplates be? What kinda general advice can y'all give me?

Well, Jeff Turner is making Cross plans available again, you can contact him with the recent Cross plans posting email address. He is a busy guy but with patience you should be able to get plans.

Basically with a ply boat it is easy to put in the backing anywhere you need to. I use Dyneema/Amsteel running backs on the Nicol for heavy weather staysail support and they work well. I added conventional chain plates for them aft on the amas which which gives a wide boom angle even before easing the leeward one. Carbon would work too. I'd run the running back to the ama where your aft wing beam lands

Yes you can add a tang to the mast, check up on fractional rig convention for location, if you plan on running a masthead chute think about that, where the forestay lands is good, if the column is pumping now a second spot half way would help, then you run a bridle connecting the 2 attachment points to the running back.

She comes with a chute. Dunno if it goes to the masthead or not.

Well look for the halyard and block, a chute needs lots of room for.motion so the block is usually on a extension/crane to clear the jib halyard and forestay. It can be either above the forestay or on the masthead. If you unpack the chute and stretch it out you'll have an idea of where it needs to hook up by length. I've run mast head chutes for light air on fractional rigs with good results, then the running back needs to go to the mast head. Your jib luff winds up tensioned by the mainsheet going upwind.

i checked the paperwork and i have all 8 of (the 7) original plans plus the full size templates for the frames. The original owner - the builder was an engineer and the plans show that.

Does this masthead look good for a(n) asymetric chute?

I was actually thinking of the outboard side of the ama where the folding beam ends to give you more range of motion for the boom, what your folding beam can take is up to you to determine as you size up the latch and hinge. If not you should be ok with what you show but it will be less convenient.
You can tell that masthead was set up for a conventional backstay, you could attach the hardware for running backs in the old location.
Yes the halyard looks fine if it is on a bail to let it move side to side and up and down. That masthead looks a bit crowded, make sure your chute has a lead so it doesn't haul all the way against it.

Also.... A masthead Spinnaker with your lightened boat and square top main should be thought of as a light air sail only. I think you'll find that big main has plenty of pull, downwind tacking should be quick.

Spotted this bit of perhaps a 31 in the parking lot of Ala Wai on a layover back from Australia yesterday.

There was a SR37 that broke up in a storm on the beach/rocks in Pahia, NZ last year and this would have been about the biggest size piece left after less than 24 hours.

I really get the point Jim Brown makes about shallow water seaworthiness. I love the way my 38ft cat can lie on the sand in a shallow lagoon and when the tide comes in she has absolutely no design compromises that limit her offshore capability. You just dont get that in a mono - they can be great boats but you can't go from 2m draft to sitting on a beach in dropping tide in 2 minutes like we can do. And it is so easy to live on the boat on the beach.

I would also add how I love the playfulness of a good multi - we can carry kayaks, swim between the hulls, play on the anchor bridle, lie on the nest when sailing, dive right off the sterns and climb back up the stern steps easily. Multis are great for those who love to play in the water and at the water's edge.
