Pearson 28 vs Cal 9.2

I'm a newbie looking at two boats that I found locally. My background is mostly sailing small catamarans for about 5 years and loved every minute of it. I also did a small amount of crewing on a Grampion and a J26 fitted for racing when they first came out. I plan to get some professional help with training to get up to speed on the boat I ultimately purchase. I plan to use the boat mostly day sailing and a occasional overnight or two "camping on the water" in the north Gulf of Mexico.

Given that limited information, I would like to get some guidance for a first monohull purchase. Both the Pearson 28 and the Cal 9.2 are in reasonably good shape but will require some work, some of which I'm capable of doing and the other such as replacing the standing rigging and chain plates etc, I'll get done professionally.

Anybody got a feel for which of the two boats would be a better choice?

Thanks in advance!

You didn’t say the ages.... Bill lapworth designed the early Cals... he was ahead of his time. I learned on a 1969 Cal 2-30. My first boat was a 1976 Cal 34III great boat fast well balanced. Blll Shaw was also an exceptional designer of Pearson yachts.... Pearson boat designs changed dramatically early 1980s. my second boat was a 1986 Pearson 36-2 fast well built designed for great accommodations. Don’t think you can wrong with either in terms of ultimate design.... matter of condition and if the layout works for you..

Good luck

Sorry, my bad. I guess it does make a difference. The Pearson is a 1977 boat and the Cal was built in 1982.

Thanks for the quick reply

Hi Ken,
For some reason your email address chokes when I attempt to reply.

Owned a Pearson 28 on the Chesapeake. Great boat!! Check the base of the mast. It was in the bilge and would slowly rot away.

Thanks!

I've heard about that problem. Some have "fixed" it by cutting the bad length off and fabricating a stainless steel "spacer" to adjust the length.

It's something I'll check.
