VHF Problem (can’t switch to weather)

Standard Horizon GX2200 radio.

When I press (technically hold for 2 seconds) the “Clear / WX” button it does not switch to the last weather channel. It just beeps once and does nothing.

Am I missing something or does this radio need to go in for service?

Jeff

Sometimes it takes a couple tries..........

If all else fails, turn it off for 10 seconds or so then back on and retry.

I didn't know Microsoft made VHF radios.

In a mode where the button is performing the alternate function "clear". Just press "16/9" to get out of that mode and press the WX button again.

That was a quick fix waaay before Microsoft.

Watch the movie First Man sometimes. They were cycling power as a fix way back during the Gemini Space program and before.

That's my go to as well as keep screwing with it until it works. Get out of straight AIS mode etc.

And knowing that it's probably not really broken helps as well.

Re: VHF Problem (can’t switch to weather)

Having owned many a Microsoft version of software , I definitely power cycled the unit a few times :P.

Hitting the 16/9 button first didn’t help.

Interestingly, the channel groups programmed in to this radio are not CAN/US/INTL, but rather ATIS/DSC/INTL. Click image for larger version

Maybe that is why the radio isn’t jumping to WX!?

Seems like you have an international/European radio rather than a US/Canadian one. And fascinating as there was just a thread running here about ATIS capable VHFs and Standard Horizon didn't show up (and it doesn't show up when I look at the manual). But there it is, and it also shows up on the UK Standard Horizon website as ATIS capable.

Re: VHF Problem (can’t switch to weather)

I just spoke with Standard Horizon out of California. The radio is indeed European (so, GX-2200E) and there is no way for them to change the channel grouping in the radio. I will need to buy a new radio to fix that.

The MMSI can be changed, as I’m sure many will know.

Re: VHF Problem (can’t switch to weather)

You're not alone. Our boat came with an Icom M505 and it wasn't until we were back in the US and the CG asked me to switch to a duplex channel that I realized it was the "E" version and there was no US/Intl switch or button And, same as you, Icom reported no way to convert to the US version.

That button was so ubiquitous to me that it never even crossed my mind to look for it before I needed it.

'way back in the day a fellow boater had the E version of my Icom radio (an M-55 IIRC) without Wx channels - turned out that moving a tiny diode on the board would tell the radio it was now the North American version. But surely no longer done that way today.

If it’s a euro model it will not have can, usa, and wx channels. Did it work before? Or new radio?

Came with our boat. Previous owner was Austrian and must have bought the radio in Europe and brought it to the boat in Central America.

Oh how I wish it was still done that way!
