Re: Raymarine EV200 vs Hydrovane

Sheesh you're a cynical person. I did not state that I had the windvane at the time, so why make the assumption?

As it happens, I did, but it was my very first crossing with it and my first...

Re: Raymarine EV200 vs Hydrovane

I would say that the vast majority are in fact not used at all as the biggest reason for that phenomenon. Wind vanes need a bit of experience to work well and lots of users give up too easily. And...

Re: Intermediate Stays

Don't know what boat you have, but assuming you have something smaller than a 45 footer then I don't see how you would do that in a permanent set-up. The stays need to support the solent stay and so...

Re: Need a boat for circumnavigation

I would kindly suggest that your post is far too broad brush. There are many threads on equipping a blue water boat on this forum, may I suggest you read those first and from that you give a first...

Re: Windvane pilot with dinghy davits on transom

FWIW - I bought a Hydrovane last May and have been very happy with it. It's expensive but very durable.

Re: Finding the monohull family cruiser for ARC 2019

I think you started out your e-mail on a positive note then as you wrote it you start contradicting your first statement. Lots of assumptions there. And you have not taken into account the work that...

Re: Finding the monohull family cruiser for ARC 2019

I joined ARC Portugal in 2014. The safety gear I needed (but mostly also wanted) was adding up to half the lower end of his budget. Before that, I had already spent more than his entire high-end...

Re: Funny conincidence!

It's not important, and completely O-T, but Japan wins this by a landslide. Germany second, and surprising to me, my own country third. French just behind us, so they don't do badly at all.

List...

Re: A Question About Rough Weather

Yes a real shame. She was a lovely boat, as evidenced by the videos by drakeparagon. She was still called Bella Luna at the time, but it is the same ship.

Re: A Question About Rough Weather

Very true. There have been some abandonments in recent years where I have to question if they did not give the boat too little credit. Wolfhound being a notable one.

Re: Crocodiles in the Kimberley

I studied with a lovely guy that got killed by a saltwater croc snorkeling off Picnic Beach in September 2005. Be careful out there.

Re: $3,000/mo cruising budget planned

I would expand on this and say that if you want certainty you shouldn't be in a sailing boat.

Re: Sailing Buddies

I find that it pays to pay, when you're not experienced enough. Get a professional on board for a couple of weeks. They won't screw you over and they are used to getting along with a wide variety of...

Re: A Question About Rough Weather

All good and well for crossings of less than 3 days but if you're crossing oceans you WILL get caught in weather, and you can't outrun it. If you're prepared for it, it is only very rarely a real...

Re: Team Vestas hits reef

That's what I do as well, but I also take the paper chart out and plot course and position. It is also advisable to set your depth alarm to 75m or so if you know you are in the vicinity of islands.

Re: Team Vestas hits reef

Sorry but that has absolutely nothing to do with what happened here. They could be forgiven for hitting something that wasn't on the charts. They can't be forgiven for hitting a charted reef around a...

Re: Team Vestas hits reef

I've seen Ian Walker's (skipper Abu Dhabi) video and he says the same thing. The island only shows in certain layers. Excuse me??? If an amateur cruiser would make this mistake, he would - IMHO...

Re: Team Vestas hits reef

They may have hit the reef but they would have run straight into the island.

No excuse, Wouter Verbaak and his skipper made a schoolboy error.

Re: Convenience of the metric system

Which bloody system has multiple types of ounces??

The reason the joke works, and from the reactions I suspect most here didn't know this (and thus didn't get the joke), is that gold is weighed ...

The engineer of the UK importer in Plymouth told me this and demonstrated it to me. I have no idea if this pertains to older models - it is generator independent, the charging unit is made by another...

There was an article about a brand new boat delivery that had a rudder failure and sank in a Dutch magazine last month. The make and type were not mentioned, but several people have reported that the...
