Re: Topping Lift Question

This!
We did without for a while, but redeployed the topping lift for the above reasons. We routinely strap the boom this way at anchor to prevent wear on the gooseneck.

Re: Dinghy Ground Tackle & Anchor

We use a 5 lb Danforth. More than enough so far. 40' of nylon braid. No chain, have used a 6' dyneema leader then just bowline to that. We carry an extra 40' rode and have used it a couple of times...

Re: USVI to Bahamas

We stayed in Marina Pescaderia, Puerto Real for 2 nights.... first marina this year. Staff was great and helpful. Free dinghy dock for the anchorage folks. Rented a car at the marina to reprovision...

Re: USVI to Bahamas

NW Culebra has great coral. Also the reefs off La Parguera were in good shape. We anchored at the fluorescent bay there (a fun midnight outing) and did day trips to the reefs. All much better than...

Re: USVI to Bahamas

We just finished this leg and arrived in Inagua yesterday. Since you say you prefer day hops, the southern route is probably preferred.

We puttered through the SVI and PR stopping to enjoy along...

Re: trying to figure out what this is...

I would guess solar mount to go on stern. Perhaps the black wrap is to prevent stern light reflection-- we added a similar tape to part of our davits for this reason.

Re: Winch maintenance

We use standard green waterproof grease for most jobs requiring grease on the boat.

Re: Any problem with a long soft shackle to attach snubber/bridle

We do something similar to what noelex shows except without the extra strap. Soft shackle through a chain link to an eye in the snubber. The nylon wears/degrades at the boat end faster than this end....

Re: Cruising the USVI

We had the same experience as jibstay wrt the anchor permit. Short term permits are no longer required, only long term.

Talking to some locals we have heard that long term permits are required to...

Re: Musk says Starlink will work on boats

The Starlink satellite size is approximately 3.2x1.6x0.2m, weight 227 kg. Not quite car-sized, more like a Portland Pudgy [emoji6]

Vieques dinghy security

Heading to SVI/PR in a couple of weeks. It seems there was a rash of thefts several years ago in Vieques, even losses of locked dinghies and motors. But I haven't heard anything newer. Anyone know...

Re: Clearing to St Martin from USVI

We just got back to USVI after a month on the Dutch side.

If you are going Dutch side you need to show vax proof using their online EHAS system and pay the fee. No test needed if vaxxed. Print and...

Re: Bahamas vs E. Caribbean for ease of boat life

Just to answer part of your question: yes it is better in the Caribbean in the winter! We are currently in St. Martin and have had great weather in the region since Christmas.

Bahamas will get...

Re: Shredded belts after lifepo4 upgrade

Overdriving the alternator would overheat it. May, or may not, cause slipping. Do you get overtemp errors on the mc614? We have to run with FE-4 (75% limit I think) to keep our Balmar temp under...

Re: Sail loft in Fort Pierce area?

Mack Sails is in Stuart which is pretty close, and they came up to Ft Pierce for us a couple of times. Have had good experiences with them.

Re: Adding resistor to Danfoss system

According to old Adler/Barbour/Waeco docs:

270 ohm = 2500 rpm
680 ohm = 3000 rpm
1500 ohm = 3500 rpm

Or, just put the new thermostat in series with the old which keeps the resistance the same...

Re: Freestanding mast opinions wanted

Here's a lovely new center cockpit boat with freestanding mast. Not sure of the manufacturer. The Leisurefurl boom pairs well with the rig IMO.248837

Re: Adding resistor to Danfoss system

Ah, understand your question. Yes, the digital thermo is powered via +12/ground separately from the switched line. So it has access to the needed power.

Re: Adding resistor to Danfoss system

Works great, has done so for a year. Placed in serial on the "C" line. The internal resistance of the digital relay is very low. Above the set point, the current is set by the resistor in the legacy...

Re: Adding resistor to Danfoss system

FWIW our old Waeco unit expected a 680 ohm resistor.

What I did when adding the digital thermostat was to place it in series with the old manual controller, then set the dial to max cold so it...

Re: Fixed Mount VHF recommendation w/ AIS and 2 handsets

The Standard Horizon GX2000 can accept AIS messages but has no internal AIS. Ours works well with the Vesper 8000. It supports a remote Mike.

Re: My Rocna didn't hold in mud - a first. Confession from a cocky new gen anchor ow

This happened to us with our Mantus M1. Thick mud in grass plus a 180 degree thunderstorm shift. Huge adhesive mudball that prevented the anchor from resetting until we cleaned it.

BUT: the clog...

Re: Kato Davit Hoist Block -Line Lashing

I have the same davits. Love the davits but don't like this attachment method.. however the forces are pretty small here. I think they're trying to allow a very close "chock-a-block" hoist and not...
