Re: Best Whiskey

40 creek. It's a bargain and it's tasty. There was a single malt I've tried to find again but never have, very slightly sweet, lots of smoke flavour and smooth as glass. Bought the bottle for a...

Re: Alberg 37 1975 wet send and water in encapsulated keel

I would be VERY cautious in washing the sand out with a hose, remember that that sand is there to space your ballast off the glass in a lot of cases, and removing it all by flushing may cause the...

Re: Starlink mobile announced. Business rates ?

Yeah, no kidding. The more sensitive dish is interesting to me though, 2x as sensitive and up to 3x more throughput makes me suspect that it will be much more tolerant of motion induce signal...

Re: Starlink mobile announced. Business rates ?

I stand corrected. Only a twice as sensitive dish, not geo-fenced for 5x the price and 5x the monthly rate, so you'd still have to update the address every time you move, makes me even less pleased...

Re: Starlink mobile announced. Business rates ?

Which part? I have bolded the sections that seem to indicate both the huge cost increase, the change in antenna and the lack of geo-locking from the article linked. I want to be happy that it's...

Starlink mobile announced. Business rates ?

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/02/spacex-starlink-premium-satellite-internet-tier-at-500-per-month.html

I wanted to be excited, but 5x monthly and 2500$ deposit

Re: Strange marks in Hull

For some reason the picture won't blow up. The name/potential that the add is lifting photos from a very well known cruiser's boat should be a huge red flag. I think you want someone on the ground...

Re: Profurl P40 replacement bearing kits

I have an old Profurl installation manual, came across this thread because my rigging notes indicate a p40 was used originally. Looking for the same things. Though I am unclear if mine was replaced...

Re: Diesel fuel conditioner with each fill-up?

Important for old motors with the new ULSD diesels I feel. I run Howes. Why Howes?
1. It is available everywhere.
2. The cost is reasonable.
3. It smells nice, I fill my filter housing...

Re: Should I renew my teak decks

Flexi teak gets my vote. Because it's all one material just strips of black, I've refinished a clients one a few times with a belt sander. Keeps the look without the hassles. Not sure about cost...

Re: Grainger Westward Tap & Die Sets

For what it's worth. In my opinion Westward is not the top of the line. They are a good deal at this price though! I used to buy them as first line sets for staff. They hold up to that sort of...

Re: Yacht Delivery Death Traps.

This is one of the no brainers to me. Case in point my own life is an object lesson in what a bad survey can cost you. I thought since I spent 1000$ and this is 15 years ago on my small...

Re: Dirty, Filthy, Dickinson Heaters

Wallas are so so much quieter than the others. Chinese hydronic combo unit is my next choice for a small boat I think. Heat hour water and do forced air heat. Some trade offs but useable for...

Re: Adhesive for Fiberglass

Personal preference. I'd use poly because epoxy and mat don't play nice, and mat is easier when dealing with angle changes like the edges of a block, oh and it kicks faster. If you have epoxy on...

Re: Adhesive for Fiberglass

Is the ceiling bare glass or gel coated?
If bare glass, a quick scuff with a grinder and 2 strips of 1.5oz mat over the blocks in a cross shape essentially will do just fine. Step one, stick the...

Re: To SSB, or not to SSb...that is the question

I was going to go sat only. Have since reconsidered.
I notice that older but decent quality radios are affordable from Aliexpress, not sure about quality but if mine fails I might test it out. I...

The problem with conformal coatings is easiest to me to think of like painted aluminium. It delays the start of problems but once the problem is there...

Re: Point of use hot water heaters

Unfortunately they might pitch it as such, but I am extremely skeptical. As a heater to heat a hot water tank via heat exchanger? I do buy that one. However air+HW out of the same unit strikes me...

Re: Point of use hot water heaters

If anyone finds a diesel fired tankless, let me know I keep thinking they have to exist. My last boat used a mini-keg as a hot water tank. Seems to have lasted since '72 and kept the pilothouse...

Re: How many bilge pumps?

I think that is largely an old wives tale, or people are running dodgy undersized pumps.

That assumes:
1. The sailor can fit the bucket into the space where the water is, I don't really want...

Re: How many bilge pumps?

I chuck a sump pump in at the dock, connected to shore power. Own float, own power source, unlimited power available generally. takes the wear and tear on a cheaper pump. Works great.
For...

Re: Butyl Tape Sources - Alternative to Bed-it

It was of better quality. New RVs I've seen a lot more goop in a tube these days. Give a guy a cordless powered gun and you can bed stuff more than 3x faster especially on big roofs in a factory. ...

Re: Difficult survey: no wheel

Please do not use vice grips, why use a wrench on a smooth shaft you can kinda but not really jerry rig it in a pinch by taping the key in but it's still not great? There are two reasonable...
