Re: I give you the Slip from Hell

And to get out - the original question - fender the port stern corner, all lines taken in except the port stern line looped around the dock cleat and cleated back on the P stern cleat, then reverse...

Re: fixed props or not on yanmar sd31's

We experienced that in spades taking our new-to-us FP Antigua 37 south from Seattle, running some 200nm before a gale after rounding Cape Mendocino - under small Solent jib only, surfing down the big...

Re: fixed props or not on yanmar sd31's

Just remember to sail with your fixed props in N, not in gear as for folding props.

Re: 60ft alu centreboard engine / drive train setup

That's 110HP @2000 only if you are so severely over-propped so that you can reach 2000RPM only at WOT (and will burn up your turbo engine due to inadequate cooling water flow). Properly propped for...

Re: What Color Should Oil Be On Dipstick for 40 HP YANMAR - 3JH5E - SD 50?

Since when did Toyota offer diesels in their autos or SUV's in the USA this century? The poster I referred to didn't specify diesel. I do remember a diesel light truck they sold here 35-40 years...

Re: need help: Flexofold 3-Blade 18x13L instead 17x15 fixed, boat speed at ticktick

The original engines on the Lavezzi were 18HP - like my FP Antigua 37's - and must have been replaced by the current 50HP to account for the original tiny props. And the difference in helm offset...

Re: need help: Flexofold 3-Blade 18x13L instead 17x15 fixed, boat speed at ticktick

[QUOTE=CaptainRivet;3620382]Hi prop specialists,

can anyone here tell me if the FOF 18x13L instead of 3 Blade fixed 17x15 is likely to be faster or slower in idle 800RPM:
i do know with 17x15...

Re: Detroit 671 oil leaks

Years ago on our '93 FP Antigua 37 w/ Yanmar 2QM-20's, oil leaking around the HP injector pump developed in the port engine on the way from Seattle to Baja. A mechanic in San Diego found a gasket...

Re: What Color Should Oil Be On Dipstick for 40 HP YANMAR - 3JH5E - SD 50?

Yep, even @ 230hrs when I got my boat w/ VW 165HP TDi, black right after a 6L oil & filter change and run for a couple of minutes.

Toyotas though?! My '06 Highlander Hybrid V6 w/ 130,000 miles -...

Re: General questions about sailboat maintenance/DIY repair?

If you get the Atomic-4 boat, I would urge you to replace all fuel-related lines, including the tank filler hose and vent, if they are original items or in the least way questionable. A dear friend...

Our first "serious" sailboat was a new...

Re: Paddle wheel speed sensor, who needs ‘em!

That's exactly what most of us (I think!) would call AWS - affected by both sea and ship's motion vectors, and to some extent height of sensor above water - eg going from 10m to 20m mast height,...

Re: Paddle wheel speed sensor, who needs ‘em!

I've been a sailor for over 60 years, and never heard "True wind" speed and vector being defined as RELATIVE to water. "True wind" - sailing or otherwise can only be defined as relative to the...

Re: Carbon mast for trimaran

About 25 years ago we met a couple in Acapulco on the 40' tri "Motu" they completed. They built a wingmast, with a chord of about 16", from Home Depot 1/8" thick "doorskins" epoxied in staggered...

Re: Paddle wheel speed sensor, who needs ‘em!

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly, but the true wind speed and vector can only be computed with your SOG and COG. Even with no current, there will almost always be COG offset from compass...

Re: 1984 Beneteau First 32 - Good coastal cruiser?

Wife and I spent two weeks on our daughter's family's classic '77 S&S Swan 41 tall rig a few years ago (six of us w/ the two teens), having very much the same layout as the Bene: barely room to walk...

Re: 1984 Beneteau First 32 - Good coastal cruiser?

Cruising with a family of four - no contest, the Catalina 30's interior is huge and open with the dinette layout, and a galley fit for a 40 footer, with large, separate berths for the kids. We...

Re: Under powered 30'er when motoring

We had an '83 Cat. 30 w/ the Universal 5411 2-cyl 11 HP diesel, sailing out of Monterey Bay's Moss Landing marina. The wide-open Bay can be a challenge with the 15-20 NW summer winds generated by...

Re: Oil leak around filter

That's likely the problem, as too tight can extrude a portion of the rubber gasket. Hand-tight only!

Re: Does this price seem right?

Nothing to do with price, Chotu, but looking at the massive 3/4" rod and the tiny pin holes that couldn't be significantly more than 1/4". Surely the pins for these won't carry the whole shroud load...
