Re: An HF transreceiver on board...

You don't need a Ham license to use a Pactor modem. Clear enough?

Re: Dogs and companionway ladder

We use a ramp for our labradoodle. Just a board we set up and take down, takes jsut a second, but that means when we want him to stay below, he stays below. No quietly, but he stays.

Re: Dog Boats

Our dog is more stable in heavy weather than we are since he has four feet on the ground, as it were. The only change I recommend is some non-sliding rugs, Cap'n Morgan slides on the teak or...

Re: Please Help!

At the least get some ocean experience. I don't think anyone will take you on without it. We once took on an experienced bay sailor with his own boat. He was almost fatally seasick from Ft,...

Re: Which countries restrict flare pistols on boats? (NOT a gun thread per se)

Bermuda takes flare guns and returns them when you check out. And, you have to check out when you are actually leaving, not before you fuel up etc. We have two flare guns we've turned in five or...

Re: Storing fuel for long crossing

And, if a bladder leaks on deck you will never be able to safely walk on that deck again. Diesel is slippery and pervasive. Go with jerry jugs. And, tie each one on to the backing board separately...

Re: ICW and a deep draft

And, follow the marks in the water, not the ones on your chart plotter or the magenta line.

Re: Email Compression Services

Sailmail isn't cheap but it has a proven track record and I wouldn't be inclined to leave it for another service. You may find, however, that your heavier competition comes from the sat phones which...

Re: Rust on New Standing Rigging

In contrast to the "don't worry about it school," I will tell you when we had the same event -- rust on new rigging within the year --the manufacturer/dealer sent someone to look at it and then...

Re: Nice Galley Details

The Whitby has a tip out garbage container and I hate it. Stopped using it and now put the can behind the companionway ladder. The problem is when it is even close to full a big wave rearranges...

Re: Best route from U.S. East Coast to BVIs?

You can't easily get from Florida to the BVIs. If you are an experienced bluewater sailor join the SAlty DAwg Rally leaving from Hampton, VA to the BVIs on Nov. 2. Or take the ICW, do the Bahamas,...

That's a redesigned website, so maybe she's planning to cruise again.

Re: Eileen Quinn (bluewater songs) where is she?

I think the Forbidden Love Eileen Quinn is different from our musical Eileen Quinn who moved to Canada with her husband to help with her aging parents.

Re: Poll. Serious injuries at sea

We almost always have an injury on passage, someone gets thrown somewhere. Broken ribs, etc. are almost the norm. Luckily the captain is an EMT so can sort out injuries pretty well. All of the...

Re: Small Dog Safety when Aboard Alone

We leave our 42-pound labradoodle alone on the boat, but always down below. With hatches and ports open, it's comfortable even in the Caribbean. We never put the leash on him until he is on land,...

Re: Sat-fi vs. SSB

We have an Icom 802 and a 140 tuner which was plug and play. You can't really test an SSB in a marina, too much interference from other masts. Out there is where it counts and out there our Icom...

We used Foley once and they charged us a 20% "restock fee" on a returned n-i-b item. Never again.

Don't know about Maine, but in Maryland we had to register to get a sticker that said we didn't need a sticker.

Re: Sailing BVIs to Florida

Or go through the Northeast/Northwest Channels between Eleuthera and the Abacos. You don't have to clear Customs if you don't stop, it's one of the busiest shipping channels we've sailed through. ...
