Fueling/Range

There's a current thread about refueling at sea. After reading it and stories about why the AICW was built, I have a question:

Part of the reason the AICW was built is, before and during World...

If this is correct, why are systems grounded?

Re: Another ICW vs Ocean Question

Very few (if any) of the fixed bridges have a 78' clearance. You can clear draw bridges but possibly not lift bridges. As I recall, there are one or two railroad lift bridges in Norfolk, VA. You...

Re: Changing oil, no access to sump?

Who changes the oil, you or your wife?

If my wife started telling me what tools I needed for maintaining the boat, I would turn the task over to her.

Re: Grounding an inverter

Dude! Being electrocuted is the same worldwide. :banghead:

BTW: The inverter is made in China.

Re: Grounding an inverter

A double insulated tool or appliance is not unsafe but a power source that's not grounded and has no provision to ground whatever is connected to it (in this case, his boat) is pretty dangerous.

A reputable alarm company to start, good locks on the doors and windows and having someone get the mail, newspapers, packages every day. Have someone mow the lawn or rake the leaves (or shovel the...

Re: Changing oil, no access to sump?

That looks like the actual pump I have except they have gotten smart and put a guard on the switch so it won't get broken when it gets knocked over.

BTW: You can buy replacement impellers for that...

Re: Great addition to the galley sink

I noticed the price also. I don't think it's SS, it's probably gold.

Re: ICW versus offshore

I don't know where the OP has gone or if he is coming back but here is a link to most of our cruises including two to Florida as far as Jacksonville and then on to the St. Johns River. We went as...

Re: Grounding an inverter

I have to agree with CharlieJ, you have bought something that's cheap enough, but not suited for a boat. The hum in audio applications is the least of your worries.

Buy something that's intended...

Re: Inverter to AC power center help

That's a pretty common failure mode - it worked fine yesterday but now it doesn't.

The inverter needs power from the batteries to work. Lots of power. If the batteries are dead. It won't work. ...

Re: Another ICW vs Ocean Question

The AICW has beautiful scenery and lots of nice towns to visit along the way. Restaurants, historic buildings, museums, etc. The ocean has - the ocean.

There are just a few shallow areas along...

Re: Choose musical instrument for cruising

I played music professionally for nearly sixty years. Bass, guitar, keyboards, lead and background vocals. Also, a pretty mediocre saxophone.

I take no musical instruments cruising. I find my...

Re: ICW versus offshore

Off the top of my head, there are only two remaining drawbridges between Charleston, SC and Florida on the ICW. Shallow water would be more of a concern for many sailboats.

Re: Viability of winter boating in New England?

You can boat in New England in the winter but by the time you chop through the ice you'll be to tired to boat.

Re: Changing oil, no access to sump?

Go to a good auto parts store and find one that fits your filter better. There are some that are operated with a ratchet and extension.

I will guess that you are screwing the filter on too tight...

Re: AntiFouling - how long before going into water

The answer to your question is on the paint can. if you've thrown the can away of covered the label with pain, the answer will be on the manufacturer's website.

A BTU is a BTU. You had some other issues or you're making a bad comparison.

A truck and trailer would get him there as quickly as possible. That boat can be trailered.

Re: Changing oil, no access to sump?

Re: ICW versus offshore

A 30' Bayliner is not really suitable for ocean voyages. Florida to the Bahamas is doable in calm conditions but Charleston to Florida on the ocean would be a bad choice. I suggest the ICW. Not...

Re: Changing oil, no access to sump?

Some folks apparently like to do things the hard way. A pump similar to this:

was included with my pre-owned boat. ...
