Re: It all began as a joke...

Given your time frame, I wouldn't worry about lessons before spending some time on the water. Check out the nearest schools for things like "introductory sails." Maybe look for daysails on crewed...

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

Re: Buying a sailboat with broken strut

I had to replace a bolt on strut after the prop got fouled and strut sheared. Shaft was bent. Transmission was okay, but the new strut didn't line up exactly so the engine mounts had to be...

Re: Dockwa

I have also used them successfully for same day reservations, but I think it depends on the sophistication of the systems at the participating marinas and yacht clubs. Some probably have live, up to...

Re: Dockwa

I have attempted reservations for the next day and been advised that they weren't available (20-30 hours later) just before and just after my etas. Wound up anchoring out in both situations....

Re: Can Sailors Learn to Go sailing Without Socializing?

My wife is the social one in our relationship, I doubt anyone would ever call me. On the other hand, she likes sailing and indulges my boat habit on the condition that I not join a yacht club. She...

Re: First Sailboat

Good news and bad. The bad is that if you trailer a sailboat you pretty much have to plan on 30-45 minutes to raise or lower the mast at each end of your day on the water. Here's a good series of...

Re: Running Diesel tank empty?

No fuel gauge and I am not organized enough to constantly record engine hours/minutes (15 minutes out of harbor for a day sail, maybe 20 back depending on where I drop sail). But I have managed to...

Re: Constant Power to Stereo

I bought a boat where the previous owner had direct wired the radio for this reason. I didn't realize. Had an outboard with an alternator to recharge the battery, but sailed from the mooring most...

Re: Expected costs of a 9 year old Lagoon 400

I think the OP and several responders are all too extreme. It depends on current condition, wants, and how you expext to use the boat. Get a survey. Figure out any extras you want immediately. If you...

Friday's wind south of LI starts out from the NE and then is forecast to shift west and south through Monday. If you are going this weekend, go east first.

Re: Liquid tape

My shower bilge pump wouldn't run when wet, somewhat defeating the purpose, so I slathered liquid tape over the wires from the float to the pump and it worked. Apparently covered a short I couldn't...

What he said. I have always figured the cost of home ownership at about 15,000 a year (whether you spend it any given year or not) for roofs, boilers, kitchens, baths, paint, etc., not even...

Re: Looking @ San Juan 21, Fixed Keel. Good Deal?

I, too, had one of these when I was younger. Great boat for daysailing. Good cockpit for company. Agree that price isn't a special bargain (although if it includes a newer outboard and good sails it...
