Re: Tools: High Quality or Cheap and Replaceable

Twenty years living in tropics at anchor mostly. Started with nice set of Snapon tools and decent power drills and Palm sanders. Corrosion killed everything after 3-4 years regardless of price...

Re: Dinghy Dock Etiquette

My hypalon tube cut by prop when I was in NZ. Only a lubber leaves motor up at dinghy dock. If you think otherwise, then leave outboard up while alongside your vessel, then check damage to Hull or...

Re: Ticket for no whistle in dinghy??

Such a pain in the ass to have to know the rules before you get behind the wheel of a car or tiller of a dinghy. The fact I can pay for it should be enough . Donít need no stinking rules.

Re: Barnacles - More Good Than Harm?

Dream on. Freshwater will kill barnacle but only elbow grease will remove them. Very wishful thinking. Most bottom paints that come with a warranty encourage wiping of Hull every month. In some...

Re: Must Oil Filter Be Filled After Oil Change?

Not necessary to fill filter but a trick I used is to turn over engine with kill lever or switch active. When oil pressure alarm goes off you know engine has lubricated. At that point start engine...

Re: 20V drill to hoist dinghy?

I have used the 28 V Milwaukie 1/2 right angle drill to hoist main and dinghy for over 10 years. I purchased on line the ultimate crank winch attachment. Would not leave the dock without it. I can be...

Re: Risk of not checking in, new country / island

If you are asking this question you stay in US or whatever. Time spent trying to clear in or out is hard enough without some ass making it harder and under more scrutiny.

Re: Water pump only works when water tank is full

If you have more than one water tank, make sure petcock on the tank you are not using is closed firmly. If the unused tank is empty or below the current one, the pump will take the path of least...

Re: Slogging up the US wet coast

Made that trip to Juan de Fula many times. After getting hammered for hours trying to get behind the Rock at Port Orford, turned South and went back to Brookings. Met an old timer. His...

Re: Minimum chain length for the pacific

75 meters for the cat. Most tried to stay farther offshore in anchorage then necessary at first. With shallow draft you can get closer to the beach. Carry a kellet for additional peace of mind when...

Re: Panama or Overland Mexico / US?

Cannot imagine the cost to haul a 23 ft wide cat across US. Probably more than value of boat.
We went thru canal in 2014. Total cost excluding time at Shelter Bay Marina about $1300usd. That...

Re: mercury outboard wont start

Many times after a outboard has sat for awhile, the float will stick. Tap bowl with a screwdriver handle and usually comes free. Always run gas out of outboard before storing as it goes bad.

Re: Drogues or sea anchor or neither

Jordan series drogue. CG has tested and to date no one has come to grief after using one. Also very easy to retrieve. The only down side is the need for sea room.
