Re: WiFi Boosters - what to buy

I'm curious as to why you would state that the MIMO feature of the AP-Outdoor makes it far superior to the Bullet. MIMO gives increased bandwidth in scenarios where both participating devices support...

Re: WiFi Boosters - what to buy

I'm assuming that's directed at me, with respect to the Bullet M2. At first, I thought perhaps you were joking, about 100 Mbps being a limitation, and then I realized you were actually serious.

Re: WiFi Boosters - what to buy

I'm using the Bullet M2, hooked to an L-com HG2415U-PRO antenna, and have had very good success. I can usually stream video when neighbors can barely browse.

Sounds like you're fairly technical,...

Re: Bed sheets, decoration, and kitchen stuff!

We're three years into full-time live-aboard on our cat. One of the first things we did was to throw out all (custom-made) cotton sheets and replace them with brushed microfiber. These sheets get...

Re: Zodiac Hypalon - Any good?

After spending a number of hours repairing leaks in our 2008 Hypalon Caribe C10X, I'm sworn off of CSM fabric and the leaky, glued seams. Our dinghy is lightly used, and has both dark (forest green)...

Re: Is Lithium Worth it?

Only seriously ignorant people would even mention this! For those of you belonging to this category, no new technology is ever appropriate. If you don't understand that it wasn't an LFP battery that...

Re: Is Lithium Worth it?

In other discussions on this board, the type of balancing circuitry that ended up killing the batteries is referred to as a Battery Murdering System. They've shown an unfortunate tendency to cause...

Re: Is Lithium Worth it?

While it might be correct that the batteries will still be usable after eight years, the question is how much capacity loss have you had during those years? Most people aren't using anywhere near...

Re: Is Lithium Worth it?

So far, I have only run a small AC unit, 5kBTU. It's super efficient (120VAC), so puts no more load on the system than a small fridge. It cools the main cabin nicely, albeit over a couple of hours.

Re: Spectra 380C recommission questions

I have carefully read just about every single post you've made on this forum, and have never found an indication of a hidden agenda. Anyone who devotes so much effort to helping others, for free,...

Re: 31.2Kw Victron LiFePO4 Split System Install

Fascinating system, Tom. Very interested to see how it all turns out. My setup is much smaller than yours, at roughly 12kWh of LiFePO4 capacity, at 12V. Currently charged from 1.6kW of solar, with an...

Re: Spectra 380C recommission questions

Tellie, in the 2017 rebuild manual, Spectra indicates that older end caps made of PET (2006-2009) will be replaced with newer ones made from Delrin. Then they also specify that stainless fittings in...

Re: Is Lithium Worth it?

Not correct. The term lithium-ion encompasses batteries made with cathodes consisting of lithium iron phosphate, lithium manganese oxide, lithium cobalt oxide, and others.

Some Li-ion types are...

Re: Is Lithium Worth it?

Whatever it is you put idiots in charge of will soon have its value reduced to nothing, or worse.

LiFePO4 batteries are not "easy to break", any more than a $1M yacht is easy to break, if you run...

Re: To rewire, or to leave alone?

A properly soldered joint does not point-load the wire. Properly made, all forces are pure tension, distributed along the entire length of the soldered connection. There are no shear forces in this...

Re: Opencpn not seeing serial AIS/GPS data

How about trying out one the serial port sniffers?

I've used Eltima's Serial Port Monitor, and I've heard excellent things about AGG Software's product as well.

AGG also has a USB sniffer....

Re: Ultracapacitors parallel to houe battery.

Your post seems a bit like you're simply trolling, which should be discouraged through not engaging. However, I'll engage, this time, since I'm not sure of your intent.

My 175 HP Yanmar engines...

Re: Opencpn not seeing serial AIS/GPS data

Warning: If the USB connection is removed from the PC or Mac during use, you must reset the connection before further use. To reset the...

Re: Is this proper wiring?

The existing setup appears well thought out and executed. Only you can assess the likelihood of conducting material coming near the terminal block.

However, a quick and easy way to protect areas...

Re: To rewire, or to leave alone?

Properly made soldered connections are superior to terminal blocks, butt connectors, or other crimp connectors. Having these inside of project boxes neither adds nor detract - it's all in how it's...

Re: Ultracapacitors parallel to houe battery.

Ahh, but there's one of the sweet things about the capacitor. Imagine, in your pneumatic starter scenario, you had a small air compressor, running off of any battery voltage, that would take the...

Re: Ultracapacitors parallel to houe battery.

This is absolutely correct, but I have found it is of little practical importance that the UC's voltage drops quickly when discharging. Cranking an engine at 10V works great, when the current is...

If you like to discover your own facts, in a world that's overrun with conjecture, assumptions, and lies, it is absolutely worthwhile to do an experiment.

I decided years ago to build start...

Re: Spectra Watermaker Vane Pump Feedback

Geoff,

I carefully studied the setup for all the Newport models, and decided on something akin to the Newport 700/1000, but with a lower rated pump. The Newport 400 uses a 140 GPH pump and the...
