Re: Yanmar stops in waves

Having cleaned a tank by removing it and using muriatic acid, I would just replace the bladder. You also want to replace the o-ring at the fill where the water may have entered. Also check the vent...

Re: VERY useful tool for jumpstarting engine

There are a few portable jumpstarters that use the much safer LiFePO4 chemistry. Here is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/Crankenstein-Jump-Starting-Power-Pack/dp/B07GT3C4YY

For a more complete (and expensive) system with alerts to your phone, camera, motion detectors, and additional sensors you might look into BRNKL (https://www.brnkl.io/). While I haven't used a...

Re: NKE vs B&G Zeus

I was faced with the same decision to replace an old B&G 2000 system. Went with NKE as my criteria were reliability, reliability, reliability. NKE design has ben stable for many years and I figured...

Re: Blank Slate Electronics install exercise.

Things I would leave out:

Sailing Instruments
SSB
NMEA 2000

Just use GPS SOG and COG, they are fine for cruising, although wind info is nice to have. I just don't want the risk of a NMEA...

Re: Pink Strut - Replace or...?

I had a pink strut on a 30 year old boat. I had to track down the foundry that had the mold and they recast it for about $250. I was told that the pink appearance means it's getting brittle and could...

My HR shackle exploded in 9 knots of breeze, smooth water. I don't know the age of the shackle, but could have been up to 17 years as the boat was relatively new to me. In the photo, you can see...

Re: Masthead Wind Instrument ( Wireless) for Rotating Wing Mast

There may be some advantages to mounting the wind instrument (or two) on a stern pole or arch that doesn't rotate. True wind accuracy is difficult, can't imagine you would be able to/want to spend...

Sailing Dying? Google thinks so. But hey, I'm sure your boat is worth as much as you think it is.

EPIC!!!

Looks like a used Phantom 4 or two with the grab handles is the way to go, with a LOT of practice!

Re: Hydraulic autopilot below deck: How does the tiller arm disengage?

To your 1st question, your hydraulic ram will limit the rudder travel to 40 degrees port and stbd. On my boat it's 30. To your 2nd question, you can get around this by removing the pin that attaches...

Re: Beware: Furuno 1815 Radar Power Hog When Off

Why don't you just wire an on-off switch to the cockpit?

You did do that for your running, deck and steaming lights also so you don't have to run below?

Hi TJ,

Got down to the boat today. Here is a photo of my Open 50 setup. Looks like the high load Harken coupler. I'm guessing there's your answer.

Cheers,

Re: Square top main sheet loads

TJ,

My Open 50 has 2 big Harken cars on the traveler, originally designed for an 1100 sq ft pin head. I'm lucky that she has near end boom sheeting. I ordered a 1300 square top to replace the pin...
