Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Update:

- Decided to go ahead and pull off the head. Was quite easy, took almost exactly one hour to complete following shop manual.
- Soldering wire was bent in such a way it would never have...

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Well, I'm back out at the boat for the weekend and have progressed with diagnosis:

- checked shop manual and found that cylinder head to top of combustion chamber clearance is 0.07 mm
- manual...

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Where did you get the compression test kit, and which one was it? I can't find one locally so will have to order online.

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Wow Sam, what a great writeup, thank you very much! That will be very helpful as I go through this process of diagnosing the issue, and I'm sure others will find this helpful too.

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Right, so just a puff of ether based starting fluid into air intake, then try cranking with no throttle at first, see if she fires.

svsputnik - Very keen to hear your experience with replacing...

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Great advice everyone, thank you very much!

Away from the boat for a few days but here are the next steps planned when I can get back out to her:

- ensure battery fully charged and starter...

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Yes, seems to have been narrowed down to a compression issue. I'll get a compression test kit to make sure, then pull the head. Hoping for valve corrosion leading to a top end rebuild over bent...

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Update - starter fluid test:
- tried spraying 5-56 (WD-40 is hard to come by in Japan) into air intake while turning engine over with starter.
- engine emits dense clouds of white smoke but fails...

Re: Yanmar 2GM Won't Fire - Troubleshooting

Thank you for your replies everyone! I've continued troubleshooting the injectors.

Steps taken so far:
- removed exhaust elbow to ensure no blockage. Elbow was clear (expected, as replaced last...

Re: Prop Strut Bent or Intentionally Offset?

Thanks again everyone for your input. It took me a while to get around to repairing the strut, but when I did it was quite a simple repair, which I've documented here: Bent Strut Fixed – Sparkman &...

Re: Prop Strut Bent or Intentionally Offset?

Well, I finally had time to disassemble the coupler. As expected it's offset from the transmission to the degree that the strut is bent, confirming that the bend is the strut is through damage not...

Re: Prop Strut Bent or Intentionally Offset?

Agreed. All evidence points to it being bent through damage, not by design. I plan to proceed as I posted above by unfastening the coupler to confirm that it's out of alignment, and if so removing...

Re: Prop Strut Bent or Intentionally Offset?

Thanks GordMay, good to have confirmation of my gut feeling. Further reinforcing the evidence that this is damage, the marina workers tell me she had to be towed to the marina yard as there was a...

Re: Prop Strut Bent or Intentionally Offset?

GordMay, thank you for the info on offset in regards to prop rotation. This boat actually has a RH (clockwise) rotating prop, so it seems the offset should be to port, not starboard as it is now. The...

Re: Prop Strut Bent or Intentionally Offset?

Hi Pete7, thanks for the reply. Is your boat also one of the S&S designs with the same rudder skeg? It makes sense that it would be offset a bit to get past the skeg. Sounds like you're also saying...

GILow,

Thanks for the tip! I didn't find that thread with an initial search, but I'll have another go. Good to know someone else had the same question.
