Re: Scrapping the boat

I scrapped out a Cherubini Hunter 27 several years ago (extensive core rot) wasn't too much of a problem. The keel was about 3300 lbs of lead and got about $1500. Sold the 10 HP Yannar for $500....

Re: Keeping cabinet doors closed

This worked for us - however in rolling seas, the doors could partially open and make some noise as the boat rolled and they partially opened and closed.

Re: Main won't drop on it's own

That's the answer (unfortunately).

Anything else is going to be speculation/trial-and-error.

Good luck!

Re: Are more expensive epoxies better?

I've used Progressive Epoxy Polymers for years. Prices are good and Paul Oman's customer service is top notch. He will return call and emails if you have questions. The web-page is nothing short of...

Re: Fresh water turns brown after rough sail

A lot of the time brown is indicative of rust. But I can't for the life of me figure why you would have ferrous material in the water system, or why rough seas would cause it to make an appearance.

Re: Fish in raw water intake

Hook up a shop-vac to the intake line, as close to the through-hull as you can get, and see of that will suck it clean?

Re: Ticket for no whistle in dinghy??

It's the transporter device (a la Star Trek) developed by Area 51 from alien technology we got from the crashed UFO's in the '50's and 60's.

They use it to send the subs out as it puts them on...

Re: Ticket for no whistle in dinghy??

That's the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Fly-In, their national convention. I live 15 miles to the south, have to listen to their planes flying 1500 feet directly over my house, for a week,...

Re: Ticket for no whistle in dinghy??

I think it's a good observation(s). There is a high degree of 'military worship' in the country. IMO it started after 911, but maybe it's just the pendulum swinging the other way from the Vietnam era...

Re: Ticket for no whistle in dinghy??

Military??? I'm curious - When you say military, are you referring to the USCG? If so, it is not a military branch per se - except in time of war. Normally the USCG is under the Dept of Homeland...

Re: Ticket for no whistle in dinghy??

Nope. We fought a war for independence because that imperial empire refused us a say in making the rules - that directly effected us - and treated us like a bastard, ginger child. ;)

If the story is exactly as you say, then it sounds like you ran into 'Barney Fife'.

Overzealous enforcement.

Re: How best to learn to sail a large boat when i'm inland?

"Don't get seasick"... yet. ;)

IMO the advice so far is all very good. I'd suggest you take Halien up on 'his' offer.

Beyond that you might consider renting the house while you crew to get...

Re: Albany NY to Lake Michigan recommendations?

Thanks! I signed up for the NtM. As I mentioned in an earlier post I am also looking for a decent trailer in case the transit through the Canal falls through.

As an update to the COVID situation...

Again, I want to thank everyone for their responses. I am monitoring this thread and the NYS canal website for information.

I am also looking for a trailer...

Re: Must Oil Filter Be Filled After Oil Change?

No. You do not have to fill the filter (unless called for by the manufacturer).

In 60 odd years of doing (1000's of) oil changes on virtually every kind of engine imaginable (except aircraft) I...

Re: Boat on stands for 2 years, stands have dented into hull

While I don't claim to have experience with Bondo below the waterline (I'm an epoxy + filler guy), I think the key words here are "glassed over and faired".

Re: Boat on stands for 2 years, stands have dented into hull

IMHO

1) Yes, it is 'damage'. Does it compromise hull integrity? Hard to say without seeing it but, probably not.
