Re: Television Mount

Is there anything more offensive, anything that more loudly shouts that someone has no idea what this sport is about than the idea of television aboard a boat? Even a powerboat?

Paul, no...

Re: Unable to make progress upwind

Well, here's a man who knows a thing or two.

Look, OP, you're at a point where you can identify a problem, but not the solution. So you are part way home. At the risk of being forever stamped...

Re: Heavy Monohulls vs Light Catamarans

Comfort aboard consists of being warm and dry and having a full belly and a dry bunk. If you have a warm, slender woman to share it with, so much the better.

Like topless baristas, new coke and the IOR itself I hope this is an jdea that will soon die.

Re: New to Sailing - Taking Advice

You asked for recommendations on reading. Reading is very important; it can speed learning by several orders of magnitude. The first book you should read is The Sports Illustrated Book of Small...

Re: New to Sailing - Taking Advice

I'll admit that it came out more ornery than I intended. A beautiful sailboat and a planing power boat in the same package. What's not to like?

Re: Main won't drop on it's own

On your way down give each screw on the track a gentle twist clockwise to see if any have backed out a bit. Also inspect the screw heads visually. Look to see if one appears polished or has an edge...

Re: Main won't drop on it's own

I'll put my money on the halyard sheave. The full main is heavy enough to overcome friction, but as it drops less and less weigh is on the halyard until finally it is unable to overcome the...

Re: How Do You Buy a Used Mast?

Some here have advised you to get a naval architect or a very experienced rigger to solve your problem. It would also be good to get someone with experience in catamarans. Certainly the large...

Re: Rotten deck core. How detrimental?

Skenn_ie wrote, "Agreed, unfortunately. Not every boat can be saved."

I, too, agree, though I might rephrase it: not every boat should be saved, especially not by me.

Re: Should I avoid this boat?

Almost all who leap from the Golden Gate die, the key word being "almost." One late night a radio DJ was interviewing a rare survivor. He asked, after you let go of the ledge and irreversably...

Re: What Do You Think?

Hahaha! Good advice from Loneshark64! (Where do we get these noms de plume? At least it's not Loanshark).

An electric windlass will bring up an anchor. It will also take off your fingers. I...

Re: Rotten deck core. How detrimental?

Hahaha! I agree entirely with Rackman, above. A soft spot is largely inconsequential. An entire foredeck gone soft would certainly give me pause. I'm too old for project boats. But it's still...

Okay. Here's a book on "mistakes to watch out for": Total Loss by Jack Coote. You might want to read it before casting off.

Or sail under a junk rig. Read Voyaging On A Small Income by Annie Hill.

And forget about electric winches.
