Questions about installing solar panels on bimini the first time

OK, my next upgrade is solar and planning to start soon. I am going to try to do this myself as much as possible.

I haven't decided between flexible and rigid panels yet. I know already many of...

What do you all think of "Flex Seal"

If you haven't seen the ads, Flex seal is basically a group of products that claim to provide a flexible, water tight seal, applicable with a spray can, tape, or caulk type gun....

Re: What would you recommend about finding out where wires are broken?

I'll improve it eventually, but it is only for a light. And the crimper that was used previously had rotted away, which is just bizarre.

Re: Necessary for CO detectors to be "for marine use"?

I'll give a little update to what I did. My boat is supposed to have 3 CO detectors, one for each sleeping area (forward cabin, aft cabin, and main salon since it can be converted into a bed)....

Re: What would you recommend about finding out where wires are broken?

I'm sure that few people are dying in suspense for an update, but here it is anyway. Yesterday, I unscrewed part of the wall/headliner in the forward cabin because I was just curious what was in that...

Necessary for CO detectors to be "for marine use"?

CO detectors labeled "for marine use" cost like 5 times as much as standard CO detectors at your local hardware store (like $100 vs $20 here in the US). I can't find anything on the difference...

CO detectors - chirp chirp chirp!!

My boat has 3 CO detectors that came factory delivered in 2006. One of them starts chirping every day. I press the reset button, and it is fine until the next day. I know it's not a CO problem...

Re: Neel 43 thoughts?

I have examined NEELs at boat shows, and spoken to he designer Eric Bruneel.

Some people are asking, why this over a catamaran? Because this is a trimaran. Better motion and faster. Bruneel...

Re: Solar powered cooler/freezer

Well they are insulated like regular coolers are, with a battery to run them when there is no sun out.

With solar going directly to the unit instead of passing through other wiring, it's...

Solar powered cooler/freezer

Anyone used a product like these? How well did they work?

For most people I know, powering the fridge is the #1 reason to have solar panels on a boat. So why not cut out the middleman and be more...

Re: Hunter 456 Reliability & Quality

I own a smaller Hunter. Apparently there is a big difference depending on the year although I have heard conflicting dates on this. Bottom line though, your survey should identify any of those...

Re: Replacing old Raymarine chartplotter

OK, this leads to another question. I have heard the newest ones have GPS antennas built in. But how that can work with a bimini? Doesn't it need a clear connection to the sky? The good thing about...

Re: Replacing old Raymarine chartplotter

Like I said, I don't have anything fancy. No radar, no DSM depth module. I simply want to swap out the old chartplotter with a new one. My question is, are the connectors and everything the same? And...

Replacing old Raymarine chartplotter

I have an ancient Raymarine C80 chartplotter that looks like this (https://images.yachtcloser.com/3832222/3832222_2_20120119080604_17_0-980x652.jpg). It's from 2006. It functions, but updating the...

Re: Honda Portable Generator: Will This Work?

Until wind or wave knocks it over and shorts out the generator.

Re: VERY useful tool for jumpstarting engine

It's lithium-ion like a cell phone battery. You can charge it by plugging it into anything. I keep it topped off by plugging it in one of my 120v outlets while on
shore power so it's ready to go...

VERY useful tool for jumpstarting engine

Just passing this along as a tip.

This type of item is becoming popular, a portable battery that includes jumper cables because when it is at least 3/4 charged, it is supposed to be strong enough...

Re: Sticker shock on marine generators

Mostly for air conditioning while at anchor (which I can't do with solar panels) and as an alternate method to charge the batteries. I am also installing solar.

Re: Southerly boats

I just wonder how well can they point, and how comfortable are they on a passage?

The swing keel, even when down looks a little small and there is no ballast bulb on it. So I assume all the...

Re: Mixing AGM and Lithium batteries

tkeithlu, you are awesome!!! Thanks for the tip! I ended up going to Sams.

I decided not to switch to lithium at this time. The only local places that had AGM batteries that were the right size...

Mixing AGM and Lithium batteries

My boat has 4 x 12v AGM batteries total. All the batteries were stamped Sep 2007.

2 x AGM in bank 1
2 x AGM in bank 2

Bank 1 still has very robust voltage but bank 2 has failed and needs to...

Sticker shock on marine generators

I never needed a generator before, but now will likely need one for some upcoming plans.

I thought I had a pretty good idea of pricing based on what I know of portable generators, but OMG I was...

Re: Liveaboard blue water boat: Nauticat 44 or Amel Super Maramu?

Going by the photos, that is an awfully good price for the condition it's in. And it has a bowthruster to help if you really have a problem turning into the wind quickly enough. Plenty of storage,...

Re: What would you recommend about finding out where wires are broken?

Thank you so much, but even with the photo, this is way beyond my level of understanding.

Re: What would you recommend about finding out where wires are broken?

Not really an option. There just isn't any exposed wiring for me to test this way. Even if I pull back the headliner as far as I can, the wiring is also inside another tube. And even if it wasn't, I...
