Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat

Well, one can still make a plan - circumstances don’t affect that at all.

Following the plan, that’s something completely different.

We started developing a rough ten year plan a few years ago,...

Re: Any early retirees turned cruisers with big careers have regrets?

Are you sure you didn’t miss out ‘snoozing with your wife’ after lunch? A very satisfying form of recreational activity.

Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

We are planning to remove our propane stove and oven and replacing with electric.

The stove seems an easy decision: induction hob. We will need to swap out some of our beloved Tefal cookware with...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

That’s just fine. But to compare specifications and calculations among many different sail boats 100% sail area is used: full main and non-overlapping head sail. And some boats are set up to sail...

Re: Stealth mode - New Generation Ropes

I have been successful in asking for and getting partial lengths such as 60m and 80m, typically available when they’ve had other part-reel orders. Just ask.

Yellow doesn’t bother me at all. YMMV

Re: Creating polars for an older cruising boat

In PW you can adjust the upwind and downwind polars in the range 20-200%, so you could still use your boat’s polar file.

Re: B&G autopilots

Sorry, previous post totally messed up. Trying again.

Eeek!

The only time that luffing up is appropriate on a performance cat is with TWAs <40, where the sails immediately start luffing and...

B&G autopilots

Eeeek! The only TWA angle where luffing up is appropriate is <40 degrees, where the sails will immediately start luffing and lose power. But remember that the turn upwind adds the turning force to...

Re: Creating polars for an older cruising boat

PW does the routing calculations on their own servers with the most precise model information (based on subscription level I assume) and only send the resulting information back to their client, so...

Re: What is this hole?

Given the fairing for both the hole and the end of the slug I think dfelsent is correct - it’s for a dyneema eye splice of an outhaul. What’s a little weird is that it runs the outhaul line in the...

Re: Vendee 2020

Just loaded it - awesome. Much easier to view the forecast weather.

Sure looks like the group of Louis Burton, Samantha Davies, and Alex Thomson are best positioned to get around the high pressure...

America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

Great rebuttal. There is no doubt that these boats, as all the other before, require extremely well trained and extremely talented people in each of their on-boat roles.

I’ve heard from a...

And garlic cloves to keep the vampires off. Also works for cougars when doing a Hash and arriving at a pub where they’re on the prowl.

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)

Great articles on that site, thanks! 25 knots boat speed in 6 knots true wind speed is pretty special.

It seems that races in sub 8 knots will be the trickiest ones for keeping the boats foiling....

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

If you head off on a passage of 1-4 weeks duration, at best your departure plan and forecast will be accurate for 3-5 days, possibly a week in particularly settled conditions. But a low pressure...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

Static stability calculations depend on displacement and beam - typically charter-type cats do well on this measure and better than performance cats. None of this matters if a hurricane comes through...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

I raced on XL2 when Paul owned her 93-94, including a fun Brisbane-Southport and an epic delivery to Westernport Bay. Absolutely awesome boat and I’ve been thrilled to see her rejuvenation.

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

Racers and cruisers can sail in the same weather - racers because of schedule and cruisers through choice or bad luck.

It’s nice to have a boat that can handle any weather and a shame to have a...

Ummm, are you aware of all the IMOCA racing that takes place between Vendee Globes? There is plenty of racing in the 24 months prior to the VG for teams to test their boats in races. In some cases...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

With our cat the TWA where apparent wind speed and true wind speed are equal is about 110 degrees. That’s a close reach - the apparent wind angle is less than 65 degrees.

The correct gust response...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

“Much more likely”?????

The amount of force required to pitch pole is several times more than that required to capsize. Sure, Hobie 16s and other beach cats pitch pole fairly often, but full size...
