Re: Any early retirees turned cruisers with big careers have regrets?

Since the subject of this thread is supposedly about retirees turned cruisers with big careers who do or donít have regrets it seems odd that about half the recent posts are by someone who been...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

What did you use to bait your breath with and did anyone complain of a bad smell? Did you lure in an animal with it? Or maybe you meant bated breath?

Actually I donít care and wouldnít have...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

Agreed. You understand the risks involved in sailing a performance cat and show respect for them and that keeps you safe. But not all cat-cruisers are as careful and the penalty for that is...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

You must not be aware that being dismasted has lots of other associated complications. Sometimes the mast or boom even lands on your head, ouch, or sweeps people overboard! On the other hand, a...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

The point that you seem to want to argue against is that all cats are unsafe, but nobody is saying that. But in your eagerness to defend cats you shouldnít try to minimize or obscure the fact that...

Re: Any early retirees turnerd cruisers with big careers have regrets?

I think thatís just right, that if someone is fortunate enough to have the proper training and has an aptitude for that sort of work, they gradually build confidence as they gain experience and...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

Youíre right that none of us know how the crew were sailing but as you said, even with prudently reduced sail, the boat will be propelled ďat speedĒ so I donít think we can yet rule out speed as a...

Re: Consequences of shortening rudder

Sounds like good advice for most places but unrealistic in the Bahamas unless you want to almost always anchor outside the harbor and dinghy a long ways in. Lots of places have a 6í-10í channel or...

Re: Consequences of shortening rudder

Sounds to me like youíve made up your mind. Good luck with it and please come back in a year or so and let us know how it works out regarding sailing performance.

One thing to be aware of that...

Re: Any early retirees turnerd cruisers with big careers have regrets?

I just retired from being a wide body airline captain making over $300K for last several years and found it to be an extremely low stress job, plus I only averaged (including vacations and sick time)...

Re: Consequences of shortening rudder

I think it will be either an expensive or time consuming project with little benefit. I found as long as I paid attention in the Bahamas so didnít go real hard aground, the sandy bottom is soft...

Re: Diesel Heater Advice

Iíve installed an espar on my previous boat and a Webasto on my current boat and both recommended getting combustion and air to be heated from outside the boat. But I didnít quite do that on either...

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

The owner said he thought they hit something but it seems to me that it would take a pretty hard impact to cause a 50í cat to flip and this hard impact would cause some pretty substantial damage to...

Re: Anchor Scope - From Waterline or Bow Roller

But I think itís a good thing for the OP to be ďoverthinkingĒ this as a starting point. As you suggest, itís not an exact science but before you can develop the judgement necessary to become an...

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

That's just silly. I think Cats make great sense as far as roominess and livability is concerned, but I don't like their motion underway or at anchor, and it can be difficult to find a place to tie...

Re: MANTUS MARINE GIVEAWAY - ends Nov 24, 2020

I was just looking at the Mantus Scuba Pack yesterday and thinking it would be just the thing for checking prop or untangling pot warp or any number of underwater tasks. Really like the compact size...

Re: Macerators - Oh my - which one?

Moctrans, the Great Barrier Reef and Chesapeake pollution and depletion of fish populations are all very concerning issues, I think we all agree on that. But none of these problems have been caused...

Re: Macerators - Oh my - which one?

Do you really wash out your holding tank? I pump into my holding tank 100% of the time and hope to never have to open it up. I try to pump it out frequently and so far have had no buildup of solids...

Re: Crewing as a female. Sketchy vs. Otherwise

Re: Macerators - Oh my - which one?

I think youíre jumping to a broad conclusion about where people dump but cite no evidence to support your accusation. Certainly some cruisers dump too close to shore or even in a harbor and I...

LOL, you obviously have firsthsnd experience with these impellers similar to my own, but say you would replace it with the same pump with all the same problems. I donít understand why when you could...
