Re: Just for fun, what would you do with a million dollars

Let's see....

Let's call it 200,000 for a boat, and another $300,00 for the cruise kitty.

That leaves half a million to split between booze & broads.

Otherwise, I'd just waste it.

Re: What's your drop of choice?

I'm not too picky- mostly it's all good to my tastes. If I had to pick:

On the peaty end, Caol Ila

On the end of the scale that normal people enjoy, any of the Balvenie Doublewood.

Re: First season mistakes (or should I give up before I kill someone?)

You didn't sink, and you didn't die.

It sounds like nobody sank, and nobody died.

It's all part of learning. That seems like a pretty short list for a whole season. Get out & sail more!

Re: Replace Main or Genny first?

Mostly I stick with high end powerboat canvas. Biminis, enclosures, & such. It's mostly 3D stuff. Patterning a basic sail for my uses is fairly straightforward, either in assorted software...

Re: Replace Main or Genny first?

Thanks!

After pricing genoas, I just might build one. I own a canvas shop and have the right machines, work space, and most of the tools. For a main, the savings is minimal, so I'd rather just...

Re: Replace Main or Genny first?

Thanks!

It makes compete sense to replace the genny first. I made some calls... and bought a new mainsail.

A semi-local loft had a new sail that is almost exactly what I would have ordered...

Replace Main or Genny first?

I was finally able to pick up the sails for my new-to-me O'Day 30. As expected (and priced into the deal), the main & genny "sails" are white(ish) traingle shaped rags. The newest of the current...

Re: Sailing vessel and RORO ship on collision courses - what do you think of the outc

I'm also a motorcycle rider.

All others on the road are trying to kill me, all the time. I might put a small dent or a small scratch on their SUV. This attitude and level of awareness has, so...

Re: Outboards and docking

Thanks for asking questions and learning by moving electrons around! It's much easier & cheaper than learning in real boats.

About the only thing that gives control of a vessel is the rudder...

Re: Sailrigte DIY Bimini frame as support for solar panels?

She's gorgeous! I'd like more views of the solar set up!

I'm considering something similar on my O'Day 30 in a year or two. I run a canvas shop, so I have lots of options that don't make...

Re: Question for Seatow and Towboatus patrons.

I have helped or towed a whole lot of people, including towing a 20' powerboat with my kayak to keep him off the rocks. It worked, but I couldn't use my arms for a couple days :-)

I've been...

Re: putting and arc in bimini tubing w/o a bender

I too bend 1" SS tubing as part of my job. 7/8" is much friendlier and easier to work, but no where near as strong.

You can bend a gentle arc by marking carefully and just bending it in a fork of...

Re: Using pipe cutter on bimini tubing

I use the Rigid pipe cutter. I own a canvas shop & cut plenty of SS tubing. Go slow, no more than 1/4 turn tighter per revolution.

The ends will be VERY sharp after cutting. Be aware.

Angle...

Re: Dingy Chaps - How much or how men's hours to make

I own a canvas shop near Detroit.

Listen to Ann.

For me making the chaps, I'd figure about 10 hours. My winter rate is $100/hour, plus maybe $3 or 400 in materials. This is for "basic" level....

I bought the Thompson off the scrap heap, and rebuilt the motor,...

Thanks for the discussion!

I'm in a similar position. After four years, my first mate has decided she wants to learn how to sail :-)

MOB and fire are by far the scariest things about sailing...

Re: 30 Foot Great Lake boat Suggestions

I just bought an O'Day 30.

I'm on Lk St Clair, which is pretty thin, so a centerboard was important to me.

Re: Interior rebuild: what program is best?

A second vote for Fusion 360. Mostly you'll only need the basics, which can be learned pretty quick. (there IS a learning curve!)

The best free tutorials I know about are here:...
