Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Nah, epoxy hardener is corrosive, not MEKP. Poly is a whole different story, there's a thousand different flavors. Even with a single brand, there will be big differences between summer and winter...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

It doesn't like UV or excessive heat. Make sure lids are closed tight and keep it in a fridge long term. It shouldn't go bad for a very long time. Hardener turns dark if you keep it in a metal can,...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Lol, I'll get you a pic!

Good lesson on the aramid. Only if it's buried deep; which kinda defeats the purpose of abrasion resistance, doesn't it? It's an expensive gimmick. Wouldn't own a boat...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

You should see my carbon fiber toed boots. Turn a messy negative into a positive! I was getting so much resin and carbon scrap on this particular pair while building a carbon hull, I decided I'd just...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Most likely contaminant is water. Most resins turn milky white when exposed to moisture before full cure.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Very likely thermal expansion of air in the substrate caused by exotherming resin on a warm day. Go to Tropical hardener and heat the substrate to higher than ambient temps before glassing. It can...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Tru dat! Except-

I prefer the cassette method. This is a result of building too many impregnators. Just take the cardboard tube in the center of a roll of glass, and cut it into desired length...

Excellent advice. :thumb:

That's how I'd do it. Almost exactly. Zach always gives fine advice.

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Here's what I'm getting at:

Strike your waterline now. Then apply several coats of Interlux 2000 to your bottom. Catch the chemical bond window after the final coat and chem bond the anti fouling...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

I didn't want to rain on your parade, but saw that one coming. I usually do four coats sprayed minimum, and still need to spot prime a few burn throughs. Rolling generally means you need way more...

Looking good. Hope you aren't missing any bond windows or experiencing too much blush. Are you using the thumbprint test?

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Very happy to see this is helping you. You are catching on. You aren't sanding straight lines with the longboard, are you? Big X's is what your stroke pattern should look like. I like your...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Too much. Get back further and go for an even splatter everywhere. It'll work fine like that, but if you have any lows you need to put more filler on you must acetone wipe the guide off first. This...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Hmmm. I know cost is a factor here, but I would definitely recommend spraying your primer. If you roll it, you will have to sand off much more per coat to get the roller stipple out. You will waste a...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Probably so. Good fairing is a skill it takes decades to perfect, you are learning this now. Just remember, this is supposed to be the easy part. The decks and house will be much, much worse. Don't...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Anytime. Believe me, I understand the impulse. The first few times you use it, you're like "damn this works great, but why am I paying so much for something so simple?". It's not till you try to...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Oh, I've tried. I've tried carbon, bone black, ink powder, etc etc. The key factor for dry guide coat is that while it is extremely fine and will penetrate and mark the most microscopic scratches, it...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project

Dry guide coat is way too nice for rough fairing. Use it for sanding primer in finer grits for paint prep, or for wet sanding to a finish. Don't waste it rough fairing now, it's not cheap. Use either...

Re: And So it Begins . . . Knottybuoyz' New Project
