Re: The loss of Walkabout

Thanks - you beat me to it.

I’d be happy to share more but there is a court case grinding it’s way through the Spanish legal system at this time, and I can’t say much until then. So just like my...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Yes that’s very true. There are plenty of idiots out there and I’m sure we’ve all come across our fair share of face palming morons.

I stand by AIS not being an “essential” item tho and over...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Exactly! However did the Hiscocks and Pardeys, along with tens of thousands of boats since, ever venture out of harbour and into the big bad ocean without AIS🙄

Technology has it’s place, but an...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Thanks Ann, that’s really kind.

It sucks but will free up a bit of capital for me to buy my first house, and then I can start the whole boat thing again.

I think the lesson is to just buy one...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Agreed - and this is daylight as well as night.

On a previous Biscay crossing we had a fisherman (~50ft trawler) suddenly change direction and cause complete navigation with our course.... as they...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Of course! I think it's more disbelief that it's happened, and being resigned to the fact I'll need to spend a bit longer in the UK rather than heading to the Carib and back to Aus. I could easily...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

So, there's the EU and the EU. Not all small fishing villages have the same financial backing as say, Berlin, so they'll still try and make a quick buck wherever they can (same as the Carib, some...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

I can't answer both assumptions at this stage (case pending), but the one re: radar - I've spent a reasonable amount of time in Biscay and surrounding waters and every time, ended up disengaging the...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Thanks Phil.

I have to say while I’m frustrated the whole situation happened, for anyone considering Phil I’d still highly recommend his services. Not only did he get the vessel to a port, he also...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Not sure how an update on my dad’s health has anything to do with the story but he’s fine thanks.

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Haha well the first boat I had (Oday 34) I bought in Florida, had no idea about, and had the best time sailing through the Bahamas.

The next two (42ft ketch and Walkabout) I’ve spent years in...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Thanks mate.

Yep it’s terrible. I spent a year rebuilding the boat to finally get back to the Caribbean and had the boat 100% how I wanted it, not to mention it was my home as well. Still, a short...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

Well the Spanish port decided to put a repair fee on her that was double the insured value, along with an absurdly high initial minor repair cost just to move the boat to a port where full repairs...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

You’re working on the basis that the fishing boat was displaying correct (or any) lights. I’ve done the Biscay leg before on my last boat and can assure you they don’t.

Radar? Not every sailboat...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

No AIS at the time. I’d found a nice McMurdo unit but was having trouble pairing it with Navionics on an Ipad, so was leaving it ‘til Spain.

Regardless, I doubt the fishing vessel would have seen...

Re: The loss of Walkabout

I don’t believe so. Conditions were perky 2-3m of swell, relatively dark (0430) and a brisk breeze.

The skipper was on watch but had foresail out which limited forward vis, and the fishing boat...

The loss of Walkabout

So it’s taken me a while to post about this but with a couple of fellow CF members asking what happened, here it is.

Some of you will remember my cat was dropped by the boat yard due to shoddy...
