Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Spotted this bit of perhaps a 31 in the parking lot of Ala Wai on a layover back from Australia yesterday.

There was a SR37 that broke up in a storm on the beach/rocks in Pahia, NZ last year and...

Is that 34 in Bayfield? Looks like a great project and nice build site.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Cool, where at?
I’ll drop the hook nearby sometime and check it out.

My comments coming after living aboard with 2 other adults on Scrimshaw for 6 days, also owning a 34, doing extensive repairs...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

You literally can’t walk thru a SR31. They are very small boats with a big footprint.

Not saying this to discourage you or to knock Jim, but it’s more and more a boat for a different time. Marina...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Email Jim via his outrig.org email. I don’t believe so but they have cruised as far Australia. Having lived on a SR 31 with 2 other adults for just 5 days it's a small boat by modern standards.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

FYI big lagoons and beneteaus in charter use the black plastic bits on the “C” furlers all around the Caribbean for the life of the rigging. Seem to work ok, but we did use the offshore model on...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

As part of the Irma repair/refit we put a new furler and Genoa on Scrimshaw. I have all the design info on that and can get you the same sail at a good offseason discount if you’re interested send me...

What did you build?
This is the place, welcome aboard!

Spice the name somehow rings a bell, but certainly not those colors!

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Epoxy is not structural by itself. Although some patches can be done to fiberglass cored decks by simply injecting resin in rotten wood, the resulting structure is much weaker than original.

On a...

What are you sailing to Australia. There is an Australian family looking for a Searunner actually. Maybe have bought one in the states already.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

As an FYI, I did quite a big repair to Schrimshaw after hurricane Irma damage. Was a 100% polyester boat except for repairs same as Honeywind. Also Jim removed the minikeel! But has that very nice...

Honeywind is a true classic. Didn't know you had fleet over there! Did you finish that powerboat?

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I spent one week living on a SR 31 last year. I would expect a modern 31' monohull to be much more comfortable and overall practical. They are very old designs and need to be looked at in that...

Bruce and his son are in Abacos on Schrimshaw. Said they had a rough crossing with port (repaired) ama down taking solid water the entire way. Took on a quart of water thru the hatch seal....

I believe the first numbers, "light ship" are meant to include:
Working sails
Winch handles
Dock lines
Fenders
1 working anchor and short chain
Water tanks most empty
A small tool box

Re stringer fillets:

Maybe, the problem is also the rusting staples. Probably best just to sail it for 2-3 years and let next caretaker of museum to worry about that! Also a lot had been painted...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I am repairing Schrimshaw for the present owner, Bruce Matlack. Made some good progress in 5 days work. Old age (most weldwood joints failed) certainly contributed to the more extensive damage as did...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Schrimshaw got pretty banged up ashore during Irma. Theory is a few small tornadoes spun thru LaBelle during the eye passage.

The boat was blocked quite high and the ama fell down on a tractor...

Re: stern castle outboard

I believe that was a SR40 built in FL to supposedly pirated plans. Guy supposedly built 5-6 searunners which if true, should perhaps qualify for free plans anyway.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

original owner/builder of Jade told me he was working on a sawmill in Oregon in the 70s when he build the 40. Supposedly he hand selected the logs made into his plywood.

Boat has still had plenty...
