It won't do any harm at all if you bugger up the thread near the foot If you go to an automotive repair workshop they might be able to use a stud extractor tool ... |

Why don't you get longer bolts as Ted says? You would be able to unscrew the existing threaded stud from the 'foot" and insert a longer threaded stud. ... |
