Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

The 5215 is a loaded coil antenna and may be cut for the AIS band (read the literature).

The 5400 is an internal dipole definitely cut to cover the VHF marine band as well as possible.

The 5400...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Same here. Works OK if you plan ahead.

Also helps a lot to use RG213/U which is more flexible.

Rather than grease, I find talcum powder works well to lubricate the pull.

My continuing experiences with mine, in service now for more than a year, confirm this. Recent loud and clear from Helsinki Radio, from Estonia, 100 miles away. Dramatic improvement over my...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Yes, but 60 miles on ONE WATT! With respect, I think that IS something to write home about.

I chose RG213 because I didn't want to risk problems with foam core cable like LMR400. My mast is 75...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

If you read through the thread, you'll see that I long ago (about a year ago) chose a Shakespeare Galaxy antenna (internal dipole), and installed it, using RG213U cable! My AIS transceiver uses a...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

I agree with Transmitterdan -- if you have a chance of a close brush with a tree or bridge, then forget the Galaxy. It is long and rigid and there would be carnage at the masthead in such a case.

Center fed dipole doesn't need a ground plane or radials. Any antenna has two electrical halves. A dipole has both of them as parts of the antenna; otherwise you need the masthead truck as a ground...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

OK, thanks for that.

You wouldn't consider a junction box? Wouldn't that solve the problem for all time?

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

LOL!

Yes, well, the mast is still horizontal, but day after tomorrow, when the mast is stepped, she will be bristling with antennae! Russian spy trawler -- I like that. Only they never used...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Update:

So I bought the Galaxy dipole antenna like Nick's, only the newer version with silver plated elements. I mounted it much like the way Nick mounted his, on a pedestal bolted to the...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Wow, thanks for all the tremendously enlightening information. I finally feel like I understand a little bit about coax. Who would have thought that it is such a complicated subject!?

I think...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Thanks. Well, any advantage from silver is not reflected in the specs of the cable. I would think that attenuation would be the whole story, not so? It's no different. Maybe it's more durable,...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Mobile telephony is by far the single most important means of communications on board when cruising near coasts (which is the majority of the time even for circumnavigators).

It is by far the best...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

The new Galaxy 5400 is improved, with silver covered radiating elements.

Can anyone explain whether silver either in antennae or in coax (I asked that question in another thread) is really...

Here's another interesting antenna from Procom:

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Thanks, but I don't use IThings! (Other than an IPad).

My primary phone is a Nokia N9 running a Meego shell over Linux; much more to my taste.

I do have an Android tablet (a nice thing); it...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

You can easily do that with GSM mobile telephony. E.g., GSM Marine Boat & Yatch alarms (https://www.gsm-boat-alarm.co.uk/GSM-Boat-Alarms.php).

I would think that would use a lot less power than...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

I read all the Kenwood manuals from cover to cover on the plane yesterday from Nice CDA. I had not known how involved and multifaceted APRS is. So I think that settles it - I'll give myself a D710...

Re: Please Recommend a Quality VHF Masthead Antenna

Yes, I like the Icom 7000 very much, and the forthcoming Icom 7100 even better (it has a remote desktop control head). There are also a couple of Kenwood radios which look really good.

What I...
