Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

If anything, knowing holding power in various seabeds can help with sizing. Behavioral testing is good for comparing what designs are well rounded and make a good primary anchor.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I've been noticing this as well. Prior to this year, I'd only seen one Vulcan other than mine. I've seen several this year. And as always, some Rocnas, Mansons, etc. Saw my first Excel in the...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Agreed, that definitely makes a difference. In my case, it's not an issue if I'm only using chain, but once I get to the rope portion of my rode, it's hit or miss which way the chain will orient...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I have a similar thought. My Vulcan will self-orient just fine if it comes up sideways, but if it's perfectly backwards it won't flip. That might just be my roller setup though, where it would hit...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I think it's worth testing what yawing does to holding on various anchors. Then we can derive somewhat of an answer for "how much should I upsize on a boat that can't readily be tamed at anchor?"

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

That definitely seems plausible, but at the same time, unless the anchor is buried very deeply, or you have a very long scope deployed (or a moderate scope in very deep water), it's unlikely that...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I also agree with the plan of something big and modern plus a Fortress. The big, modern anchor will cover 95% of situations, and for the rest, either the Fortress will work well, or the bottom is...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Agreed. This collection of testing is probably one of the most detailed and useful that's been done anywhere.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

A high current solenoid like this would work. And you could use whatever switch with it (or more than 1 in different spots if needed).

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I'd probably just a heavy duty battery switch. I know blue sea and others make some rated as high as 600 amps continuous.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

That's a really good question. Looking at their other design, the Vulcan, the fluke itself is concave (so there's some effective up-turn), but the back edge of the fluke turns down to form a lip on...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

To some degree, that depends on your cruising grounds. In some places, 50 feet of chain, plenty of rope and good monitoring for chafe (and good chafe protection where it goes over the roller) would...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I'd almost say the Vulcan has both a turned up and turned down trailing edge. The fluke surface turns up, but the lip at the trailing edge extends down from the fluke (although the angle may be too...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

It's probably a terrible way to go about it, but could you side-tie the smaller boat to Panope and have a helper run the second boat to get more pulling power (given strong enough cleats, etc.)? If...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I'd be curious to at some point see a soft mud test of the 2 better performing groups of anchors again, but with longer scope (like 5:1 or 6:1). I'd be interested to see if the performance ranking...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I think there are 2 effects there. More weight means more pressure on the substrate, giving a better shot at penetrating a crappy bottom. More weight also means bigger (within a given anchor...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I'm curious to see a few other anchors (particularly the Vulcan) tested in that substrate. I'd expect the Vulcan to do a little better than the Spade based on how well it performed in Steve's other...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

And that's why we're all so appreciative of the work that goes into the videos in this thread. If an anchor can set in some of the violent conditions shown, I can definitely expect it to set in the...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

If the cost of SS is not an issue, the Ultra seems like the most likely candidate in my mind.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Yeah, I've seen a few concerning reports about the Vulcan, even from users of the same size I have (73 lb, so one size bigger than Steve tested). I haven't personally experienced any of the setting...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I'd add the Vulcan to that comparison as well, being similar to the spade and ultra. Only issue is that I think it goes from 88 lbs all the way up to 120 or so.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

In the Fortress case, I think the Danforth design is less reliant on weight than many others. So going to a lighter material doesn't hurt.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

As another anchor in that family, the Vulcan has even slightly larger fluke area per pound than the Mantus (or the regular Rocna), and definitely more than the Spade. I don't think anyone has...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

To some extent, I'd base the decision on measurements. I settled on a Rocna Vulcan for my boat, as out of the good, modern choices it fit best. Fit best as in being able to fit a larger size with...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Definitely a good find! I'd be curious to see you test a Vulcan at some point to see how it compares to the Spade. I'd loan you my new one to test, but you're on the wrong side of the country.
