Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Great! Sailing and cruising is for sailboats not big engines in hulls...
As for your marina... check the water depth and bridges - sailboats like the extra depth and clearance for that mast... :)

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

******
It is all about the demographics and the economy: boats are not dying at the same rate as old sailors, buying a boat, especially used one, especially from the charter fleets costs less in...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Mike,
Definitely worth a new thread on cruising in the Med vs. the US (mainly Northeast). As a Boston native that spent years in the Med, I can tell you that from my own experience and preferences...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Hmmm... and where would the water/ocean experience here?
Radiator's anti-freeze and washers fluids are not really the same... :)
better returning to the topic here.

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Well, our sport/hobby is quite complicated and challenging in multiple aspects, so we need to be a little eccentric to sail and cruise with all the time and expenses involved, not to mention all the...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

I do... :)
Just on the 40 years old seaworthy boats...
Even seaworthy is a relative term. And the costs to refit a cruising boat for today’s “seaworthy” standards can easily get to X5 of the...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Haha - the great news for you is that the oceans are just growing up with the global warming so you’ll find enough empty waters with enough clouds too. On your way just stop at the next port and join...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Couldn’t agree more... I’m somewhere between the Millenials and the youngest Baby Boomers - times were changed everywhere and with everything. I think that we have a little (big) mission here to...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Couldn't agree more. Hull alone is just one part of a boat. For the aging 70's-80's boats, a new engine would cost $20-40K, mast rigging etc would go for $20-60K, pumps, tanks, plumbing,...

Jim, you are right. And your cruising mileage is impressive by all means! But we can also agree it is a matter of personal taste and those preferences of the people considering sailing and...

I do agree with you, Mike 100%! You ARE my hero! :) The discussion was about newer generations of sailors and (potentially) cruisers that ask for more, weather justified or not and it is...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

*** look at the European cars these days vs those of the 60’s (the US had to downsize from those ridiculous cars we had in the 60’s). Can you compare a VW Passat today to the Ford Cortina of the...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

*** that’s fantastic and one of the things that used to make people happy! Really working and refitting the boat you’re going to sail on. I made more or less the same with my first 24’ keelboat but...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

The numbers are correct. I do not agree with the conclusions regarding the size for long term cruising. In today’s world up to 40’ is a day/weekend/a week off sailors. Some starts serious cruising on...

These mostly intended for the Atlantic charter fleets that lost hundreds of boats with the last years hurricanes. Chartering is growing, but I can’t call most of these real sailors (unless they also...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

Not sure I can agree. Yes, the web offers new ways to connect and experience but not necessarily encourage people to get a boat of their own and sail - not even a small one for few hours or for club...

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

While the only Great Lakes I know are the Atlantic Ocean and the Med the truth is the same. Right now there is a shortage in good boats from the 90’s due to the poor economy in the early 90’s....
