Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

In stormy conditions you have to slow down the boat, even with bare poles you must use rope loops at stern to not get too fast according to the user manual of our slow cats.

Well, a fast...

Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

I think this is consistent with the decision to buy that particular brand / model. You are into comfort cruising and living on board and not into racing. It is a different attitude.

Why would one...

Because I'm reaching / going downwind.

TWA is almost 120 degree (from behind), 12kn - but because of the boat speed, the AWA is 076 degree so slightly upwind apparent,

Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

I never claimed that, 47AWA on genoa, 60AWA on code0, 120...140 COG from tack to tack, old standard sails, inexperienced sailor, never raced and learned to trimm properly, heavy loaded condomaran....

Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

Yes, we had a great smoothe passage between Dec. 17th and Jan. 12th, sailed across directly from Las Palmas to St. Martin (F) staying as far north as possible below the duldrums for steady but not to...

Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

True. The lighter a 400 is, the better she sails. Even fully loaded they sail better than just acceptable. New sails and some optimizations of the rigg may help too to point higher.

Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

Speed vs safety is another point, light weight, huge sail area, small hulls and dagger boards make them fast and let them flip easier when not watched properly than a underpowered beamy heavy Lagoon.

Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

This is exactly how it works, the picture above shows the truth, it is the track on the chart you end up, so COG after tacking. It includes the drift to leeward and the effects of the currents....

Re: Catamaran tacking angles , really that bad???

I can only speak for the Lagoon 400S2 sport bridge.
It depends on the wind speed, and the swell.

You can point high in strong winds, op to 35 degrees AWA with genua and main, sometimes even...
