Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

The SR40 is a huge boat from where I sit. Jim Brown did a good job of not bulking up his boats as they get larger, hence the good payload..... actually listed as 3800 lbs.

Catamarans are...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

To me the outboards would increase the value............ There are far too many negatives to inboards such as having through hulls, and being difficult to access for service, having a prop shaft and...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

What nonsense..."you can't walk through a SR31".... There are areas you cannot stand up in, and areas you can't. The berth area is a stoop area, the dressing room a stand up area, the galley a...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

The numbers I was talking about were for the Searunner 31.... I have no idea what the Dragonfly numbers are, but everything still applies.

My preference for the pod is that it is a single...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Remember that the things you mention ARE payload. Reducing their weight, you are regaining some of that 1500 lb payload

The electric drive is an excellent solution, as are the lithiums. You ...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I don't have any experience with the Searunners.... They interest me, but I haven't sailed on one or even been aboard one.

Keep us posted please. The 37 is the smallest Searunner with...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Thanks..... the divided accommodations look like a big plus with the exception of the fact that the aft companionway is unprotected from spray. I can't see any good way to avoid that.

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

The fly in the soup is the payload of only 1500 lbs. That may sound like a lot, but it includes the crew weight, all their gear, bedding, etc, safety equipment dinghy ground tackle, batteries...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Various things I've read say the aft cabin on the Searunners is miserable at sea, always taking spray... which makes sense. How bad is this in reality? I would presume that the solid wing versions...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

The problem isn't the weight..... 500 lbs is nothing.... but the distance between possible points of support. 500 pounds hanging 14 feet out is a lot of leverage. The decks will easily support...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I would venture that most have standing head room in at least some areas. I was not suggesting that standing headroom throughout was a necessity........ and yes it IS a matter of priorities. When...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I would check with John Marples about the lack of a centerboard trunk. On the Searunners this is the structural heart of the boat, tying everything together. That may or many not be the case with...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Many GOP boats done well with epoxy are still sound at 30+ years of age. "dry rot" which is a misnomer, is not a problem except where there is penetration, and even then if the penetration is done...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

In many ways a trimaran will be safer than a monohull. It basically isn't going to sink, and that's worth a great deal. People usually do not last long on "death rafts" which are basically designed...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

It seems pretty clear to me at least that John Marples was catering to the performance trimaran market, rather than the cruising market. Even the CC35, which clearly lacks standing headroom anywhere...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

That bridge deck clearance is 3-4 inches more than my measurements off the drawing I have...... Bridge deck clearance is a major concern for any multihull, and especially a catamaran. The biggest...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Just another note in the weight vein, Looking at the specs on Oryx, Pete states that the average crusing weight is 9000 lbs. The displacement of the stock KD860 is 3000 kg to water line, or 6600...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

Nice boat Mark...........That's a 34 isn't it?

I'm struggling with the whole payload issue. The 31 really doesn't have adequate payload capacity for long term live aboard voyaging, and the...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

I received and appreciate the information on Oryx, but for me it's just wishful thinking.... it's well outside my budget. It's better to cruise with what one can afford than "hold out" for the boat...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

One has to ask why? And the answer I get is a combination of factors.... He's tried a half assed version of Paul McKay's Aero Junk, then a soft wing sail, and now a proper Aerojunk (more or less),...

Re: Trimaran - Especially Searunner - Owners

None of the small cats have as much bridge deck clearance as one would like. This is mitigated to a significant extent by the fact that the bridge deck begins far back, and the forward edge curves...
