Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

It's kind of amazing to me to see Steve post video after video on this thread, with such amazingly good info, and hardly any comments, or questions, or dare I say it on an anchor thread,...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Yes but Steve's testing with all Dyneema more closely represents anchoring with an all chain rode, which I'd hazard a guess is more useful for cruisers.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

That is exactly the conclusion we came to. We have a #7 galvanized 33kg. Excel as main, with a Fortress FX 37 for mud and storm over sand anchorages.

Also have the 10kg aluminium Excel (which is...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Ooops forgot to mention, you'll find high quality solenoids at automotive/trucking suppliers such as Cole Hersee, at more reasonable prices than marine suppliers. What's new?

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

We're putting the red emergency STOP button for our electric winches, and as mentioned, the best approach is to run the circuit via a solenoid that can handle the winch current load to cut off, which...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Steve,

Excellent summary criteria & video, that I hope your work gets wide viewing amongst cruisers.

We went with the Excel several years ago and upsized one size ( #7) compared to Rex's...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

The Cooper anchor has impressed me. It sets very quickly and penetrates hard packed sand well.

I'm not sure about the distribution in North America. It is less than a third of the price of the...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

There is a good Youtube video in clear water of the issue of Rocna dragging on direction reversal after it has clogged with weed over muddy sand at the Youtube vlog of Sailing into Freedom, episode...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Steve,

When I posted about the aluminium Excel back in post 237 just a few days ago, I certainly didn't expect to see such a rapid response! :thumb:

Seriously, this is such an excellent series...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Steve,

Thanks again for all your work, especially for helping dispel the myth of the concave vs convex (scoop vs "plough") silliness that has been aired on CF for so long. As they say, seeing is...

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Ok, good point on the leverage re breaking out an anchor. If that is not a good indication of burying depth, then I guess we'll have to reply on direct visual evidence from your excellent videos....

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Tayana,

I'm thinking there might be better availability of the Excel in the US at good pricing in the not too distant future. Stay tuned......:thumb:

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I liked how it obviously was a great design for "digging in" as opposed to "ploughing" performance. Proof positive that that not all "plough" designs drag under high load.

The Excel test figures...
