Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Agree. I had to do a little scalloping myself when I went to a 24” diameter prop. But the modification was on the trailing edge of the keel, not the rudder. The recommendation was a prop clearance...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

I hear what you’re saying about braking effect and slowing of the boat while in forward motion but I’m actually talking about a situation where the boat is stationary in a tight channel in a marina. ...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Thanks for your input. I don’t think generation of enough thrust is my issue, though. I have a brand new, powerful engine and a 24” diameter 4 blade MaxProp. It brings the vessel up to hull speed...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Wow! Truly fascinating articles. Thanks.
I will definitely be looking into a rudder modification like this.
Amazed at the extreme rudder angles which essentially make the system act like a very...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

[QUOTE=hpeer;3058609]Vchild,

"We “solved” the problem by retiring to the Caribbean and living in the hook. It’s a great solution, completely satisfied and had to make no modifications to the...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Good points Benz. When I purchased my boat, comments were made about the "barn door" rudder. I asked why it was called that and was told its because it is as big as a barn door. When I learned my...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Thanks Benz. Sounds like 35 degrees might be that magic number.

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Thanks psk125. I do understand the physics and the forces involved. But as you state, there is a point of diminishing returns and that is what I am seeking. What is the ideal rudder angle beyond...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Thanks Bill O. So you have 35 degrees. That is helpful. I think I can modify mine to get 35 degrees. The problem is I’m in a tight marina with the distance between docks being not more than a...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Thanks Paul L. Yeah, I understand what you’re saying and I agree completely. I’m not really talking about how to steer a full keel boat in reverse though. The only reason I mentioned reverse is...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

This picture may also help. Notice the window between the rudder and the aft end of the keel where the prop sits. Because of the closeness of the prop to the rudder, the rudder "feels" a dramatic...

Re: QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

Yeah I was thinking mine was a little restricted (less than 30). I know the dangers of going astern without full control of the helm to prevent it from going hard over. Just didn’t know if there...

QUESTION FOR OWNERS OF FULL KEEL, "BARN DOOR" RUDDER VESSELS

For those of you with a full keel and large “barn door” rudder, I was wondering what your maximum angle of rudder turn is with the helm hard over. Mine seems to be no more than 30 degrees. It looks...
