Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

It went. I sold it last year. The 7 year old GC-2 golf cart batteries held up fairly well even though for much of that time I would be at sea and had nobody I could really bother to check the...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

After selling the Atomic for $400 I realized a total cash outlay of about $2300, including batteries. I don't own the boat anymore. I sold it a couple months ago to a young lady who wanted it for a...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

There seems to be an awful lot of wiggle room for reduction ratio with these motors. As long as the motor doesn't overheat and as long as it does not exceed rated RPM at full power, the efficiency...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

My 48v system is ungrounded. And after nearly 4 years my batts have never found a way to empty out into the water. There is no connection between either pole to water. A flex coupling can be a good...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Exactly. It is supreme folly to replace a perfectly good diesel with electric when there are so many crippled boats out there available for cheap. My boat cost me $2k in a transferable slip, and I...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Yeah? Well here's a pic for you, then. The motor, thrust bearing, splined slip coupling, and complete mount, assembled prior to installation for a photo op. Hopefully I at least get high marks for a...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

UPDATE: built and installed a new motor mount (https://www.growleymonster.com/eboat/newmotormount.html) with independently aligned thrust bearing. This time I did more welding and less bolting. The...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

UPDATE

Today I finally got the new motor & thrust bearing assembly installed. I just got it in there sort of rough and ready for now. I am expecting a piece of shaft and a roller chain coupling...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Darn. The assembly is too wide. It has to fit between the engine bed stringers, a gap of a bit over 8". So I cut the front and back face plates down so that they do not extend beyond the side plates....

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Well, I assembled the assembly. Next I have to install the installation. Here is the thrust bearing adapter bolted to the ME0913 motor. The fire hose and zip ties are just an improvised lifting...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

if you are using a thunderstruck kit, I believe a belt reduction drive is included, which will have a thrust bearing in it. Nothing pushes on the motor except belts on a pulley.

Otherwise, Glen-L...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Update:

I installed the 3:1 gearbox and took a performance hit. Not much, just a few percent, but a few percent is pretty important in an e-boat. Strange, because I thought I was slightly...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

UPDATE:

Kelly just came out with a new line of sine wave controllers, which were supposedly better than square wave controllers... more efficient, quieter, longer motor life, blah blah blah. Well,...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Wow I will have to take a look at it when I get home! Do you remember what size the old shafts were? I am stuck on this ship for the next few months... gotta do that "gainful employment" thingie, you...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Update:

I had the "stick shift throttle" firmware flashed to the controller a while back. Now both speed and fwd/rev are controlled by a single 10k potentiometer. I mounted it on the tip of my...

Re: It begins: converting Cal 2-27 to electric propulsion!

I thought it was time to revisit this thread. Yes, the enclosed gearbox worked out great. I highly recommend it. The only disadvantage is that you can't easily change the reduction ratio, like you...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

I looked at various kits and what I ended up getting originally was a pair of ME0201014201 motors from I think Electricmotorsports for $375/ea free shipping. They were so cheap I thought a spare...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Update:

Changed the prop. Before, it didn't matter whether I used the 5kw motor or my 12kw motor. Didn't matter whether I used the 300a controller or the 500a controller. I could only get a...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

I don't want to go bigger than 12" due to clearance issues. I will probably try a 12x10 fixed 3 blade this year. Should be about right with this motor and the 2:1 gearbox. I seem to be slightly...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

They are as low as they can go, on the centerline. GC2, 85 lbs each, 8 of them at present, in series.

AGM too expensive for me. Got these from Sams for $85/ea. Best bang for the buck. If I had the...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Much less than that, actually, at full speed. But who wants to go fast, anyway? It makes the trip over too soon.

I will be adding another bank, though.

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

A couple more observations.

Cheap digital volt meters are not always as accurate as you might expect. And even a half volt can represent 10% of state of charge. When using a cheap meter for...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Exactly. Except I really like redundancy. Rather have 2 48v banks. Stuff happens.

I'll probably end up with a single smallish 12v emergency batt installed high and dry somewhere, charged with its...

Re: It Begins: Converting Cal 2-27 to Electric Propulsion!

Yeah I actually am considering separate chargers for each battery. Also thinking about a variac and an isolation transformer for manually managing the batts, and having a small float charger on...
