Re: Teeny Tiny Wire - Big Headache

As someone who did telecomms engineering in the 80's, I have soldered thousands of wires. My takeaway is that solder works just fine if done properly with tinned ends and appropriate insulation. The...

Re: Dinghy, most popular size and type

Fiberglass Caribe 9/10/12 RIB with a Tohatsu 18hp. Had a Yammie 15hp but since around 2000 found the newer 15hp Yammies suffer corrosion and aluminium casting issues---last one cracked right through...

Re: Biggest and best Wind Generator?

KISS---------have owned one for 16 years, bought upgraded blades from some redneck on the internet---still going strong. Its not about anything other than REDUNDANCY for me on a boat. Have as many...

Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke outboard

Can you fix either-- 2-strokes have less to go wrong and with 2 or 3 simple precautions will run forever. (never leave fuel in them for more than a week without running it and spray the entire...

Re: Down to 4 Boats...Please Help Me Decide...

Most of those boats have different iterations that perform very differently, ie the CSY had a walkover and a walk-through model with a "stumpy" keel for gunkholing, also a 37 or 36-ft version that is...

Re: Brand New Mercury 5hp will not run

Some people just have no aptitude for mechanical things, it's almost like the invisible Gremlins can see these people and delight in frustrating them, I'm fortunate to have the opposite problem, I...

Re: Will a 2023 boat also last 50 years?

My Morgan OI 36 built for the charter trade is 50 this year, she does what I want and will probably outlive me. The throwaway society makes me sick, a lot of the ills that beset the world is down to...

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 won't start

I would have picked water in the fuel, a common problem where I live, apparently, water is not flammable enough to run an outboard

Re: A couple basic questions about starting with lifepo4

This discussion is getting tiresome, read this https://cleversolarpower.com/lifepo4-voltage-chart/

Re: A couple basic questions about starting with lifepo4

Ah well, -if we are now regarding "13 or 14 years" to be the same as 20 years, I'll stick to my 20/80,----its, after all really no different than "almost zero or almost 100". In NZ it's quite common...

What?- How does your controller know you will be off the boat when it's unexpected? Please let me know what controller that is, I also want a psychic controller. Also, would love to know what kind of...

Re: A couple basic questions about starting with lifepo4

You say "you can cycle the battery from nearly 0% to nearly 100%,". I say,---"Lithium batteries should not be charged past 80% or allowed to discharge to under 20%", in other words, nearly 0 and...

Re: A couple basic questions about starting with lifepo4

Lithium batteries should not be charged past 80% or allowed to discharge to under 20%. If you can adhere to those parameters they should last 20 years.

Re: Buying advice : Would you trust a 50yr old polyester boat?

My Morgan OI 36 was built in 1974 so she's coming up for 50. I've had her for 17 of those years and have ground and filled the odd blister in that time, I've installed new through-hulls and found the...

Re: OSMOSIS - Do all boats get it? Or just a few?

Re: Are these deep cycle batteries? Why can't I check the electrolyte levels?

Those batteries are fine for a bow thruster's occasional use. I would keep them for that purpose and it's probably the reason they are located where they are. You need a dedicated "house battery" for...

Re: Lewmar winch handle - lifetime warranty? Guess not!

Just to be the devils advocate here, the winch handle is obviously at the end of its life, hence the warrantee is now expired. I would imagine the supplier of a product could not reasonably be...

Re: Help - Perkins 4 108

On the 4108 an electrical fuel lift pump will save your motor on the day the mechanical (maniacal) lift pump diaphragm leaks diesel into your crankcase turning your diesel oil into diesel fuel.

Re: Your Favorite Adhesives

No, it is like a gel and remains so, but it seals in the ABSENCE of air and will seal even through some contamination of surfaces, so when you torque crankcase halves together there is no air. It is...
