Re: Sailing Creatures . . . Sorta

I've got to admire a guy who goes that far off on a tangent like that and makes it work... very cool.

Boden 36 has it right, there's no reason to limit yourself in any way... if you're reasonably handy you can learn to weld. I taught myself just by playing with the equipment, and since then have been...

What could possibly go wrong?

Interesting history on that boat. In 1978 I approached Ted Brewer for a custom design, a 45-50' round sterned pilot house cutter which I wanted to build in steel. I had seen "Victory", an earlier...

Cat Man Do, I don't quite get it. At a time when paulrack should be congratulated and commended for the successful completion of a massive project, you're hassling him about his numbers. He's...

paint prep

There's really no such thing as too much time on the inside paint prep... as Brent points out, that's where it can all go wrong if it's not done carefully. I used Devoe (now Ameron) Bar-Rust 235 over...

steel boats

Thanks Scott and Anjou; the boat is back in the water and I've been aboard non stop without internet access until this morning here at work, and now no time. The feel of solidity steel gives and the...

I use 1/8" door skins or any 1/8" ply for patterns... ripped into strips about 2" and cut to fit. Glue with hot glue gun by putting smaller pieces on top of the joins, not overlapping 1 piece to the...

Chris: Buna N is what you want, not neoprene. Also known as nitrile, much more resistant to petroleum products. Readily available from McMaster in all kinds of shapes and sizes. I used 1/8", 1 piece...

Very very nice James; the lights are spectacular and I like the deck beams with the hanging knees holding it all up. So many many little bits and pieces...

mooring pick up

I single hand my 45,000 pound 50' boat quite often, and she lives on a mooring right at the mouth of the harbor. When it's honking out of the southwest at low tide I have about 2 1/2 boat lengths...

fairing and sealing

If the keel is lead it doesn't need sealing, except possibly because the bottom paint might stick better to sanded epoxy than to lead, and the epoxy might stick better to the lead than bottom paint...

Def, I think I would fair under, probably with west. Grind where necessary, clean, apply unthickened coat, and while wet fill with west thickened with 407. Let that go off, sand, rinse, and repeat...

on boat building

Some people just have a boat inside them that has to get out. If you're one of those guys, then you go for it, no matter what. But you have to be sure you're one of those guys, because a 45-50' boat...

I think I would go one step further... a good sized thickened fillet on all the inside corners, then take a router and put a generous 1/4 round on all the outside corners, and then proceed as cburger...

steel keel

A steel keel is no different from a steel boat, and all the major paint manufacturers have epoxy systems for steel boats. They all involve sand blasting first. Encasing steel with fibreglass would be...

This is one way to do an overhead... somewhat labor intensive, but I like the look. 1/2" teak ledger boards with a 1/4" rebate holding up fibre glass panels which I made using fake tongue and groove...

Yeah I know Chris... they are a tad pricey, but awfully nice. :D
I'm agonizing over the 3 mile ones, but they're a bit much.
The 2 mile are bad enough.

Skipmac: No, I don't think you'll warp the boat at all if you epoxy the teak. Your panels are already flat, fastened down, and stable, and epoxying teak to their tops shouldn't change much. I'd use...
