Re: 42' Leopard - Do I Really Need a Double Halyard ?

This one is always a brain teaser. But I've been through it enough times with enough experienced racers and riggers to be sure. Herkam is right. A 1:1 halyard puts more compression on the mast than a...

Re: LiFePO4 Batteries: Discussion Thread for Those Using Them as House Banks

This keeps coming up because what you are saying seems contrary to laws of physics. Granted, LiFe cells in parallel will not self-balance perfectly if they are in the relatively linear voltage range...

Re: Simple form of one-off or occasional balancing

One thing I would be concerned about here is current limiting. If the individual cells are at different state of charge, how much current will flow as the cells balance? Will that exceed the charging...

Re: LiFePO4 Batteries: Discussion Thread for Those Using Them as House Banks

Yes, but Bill was specifically asking about parallel balancing... not series/parallel or series. In parallel, by definition, all cells are at the same voltage.

I just wanted to verify that you are...

Re: Downwind Catamaran Sailing

Dave, I reread your post and realized that I had misunderstood. "Clew to the wind" meaning strapped (oversheeted) rather than luffing. As a result I deleted my reply as soon as I could. Sorry about...

Re: LiFePO4 Batteries: Discussion Thread for Those Using Them as House Banks

I wish I had a better understanding of Li cell physics. However when I hear things like this I start to wonder if the problem isn't my understanding of batteries, but rather others understanding of...

Re: Gunboats: Any First Hand Info?

I think this more or less exemplifies the difference in design brief between Gunboat and Atlantic cats. If you want to travel the world, buy the Atlantic. If you want to beat people in races, buy the...

Re: New Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yes it will. The DC to DC converter will trickle charge your 24 volt thruster bank from the house bank. A 24 volt @ 10 amp DC-DC converter will cost you a few hundred bucks. They are about 90%...

Re: New Lithium-Ion Batteries

Be aware - you need a DC to DC converter, not an isolation transformer. Transformers only work with AC. Batteries are DC.

One other thing to keep in mind... with Japan's current difficulties affecting the global supply chain, a lot of camera equipment is in short supply and prices have risen considerably. For example...

Re: Best Camera for Cruising

Hi Doodles,

I have a micro four-thirds interchangable lens camera (Panasonic GF1) as well as a waterproof compact camera (Canon D10). These both have some advantages for boating and cruising. You...

If that's the definition of sunk, then a boat on the beach, in a drydock or on a tidal grid is also sunk. Hmmmm....

Seems to me that a boat isn't sunk until its hull is entirely under water.

Which reports? Link?

Everything I've seen on this thread indicates that it was beached to prevent it from flooding further. The fact that it was beached does not prove, does not even suggest that...

Well let's be clear. Thread title says "sunk," first post says "almost sunk," later post says "both hulls flooded." You'd need a lot more information to conclude whether or not this boat was actually...

OK let's see if I've got this right. Rake is controlled by headstay length. Backstay tension takes out headstay sag. Thus backstay effectively lengthens the headstay while under sail. I'm going to...

Thanks for the explanation. Unlike a fractional boat, then, the ability to tension the backstay and bend the mast comes at the cost of a lot of slack in the forestay when the backstay is detensioned....

OK, I stand corrected....

Can you explain how that works for me? What is the backstay working against to bend the mast?

On a fractionally rigged boat, as you add backstay tension, the masthead...

I don't think anyone has ever claimed 10%-25% of purchase cost / year on maintenance alone. That is a strawman.

I think 10%-25% of purchase cost per year as a total cost of ownership sounds like...
