Re: Rod Rigging and Insurance

No, rod rigging should have the terminals replaced every 4 years and be substituted every 8 years.

Insurance companies base their demands on what rig manufacturers recommend. On the brand I use...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

Here you have an interesting explanation about the advantages and disadvantages of keel stepped versus deck stepped regarding the Volvo 65 By American Naval Architect Eric Sponberg : Keel stepped is...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

Water on the bilge? I never had water on the bilge on modern boats. Most of them use saildrive. My actual boat has 16 000 nm, never had water on the bilge.

I would like to know about those many...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

That has not to do with reality in what regards a proper insulated mast but with the reality of a poor not insulated one. Mine does not let water in and even after winter storage, all winter taking...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

There is a reason for keel stepped mast to be used when maximum mast performance/efforts are needed and that is why all race boats or true performance boats use them (or use very expensive and strong...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

I believe that information, even if posted in 2015 is much older. You have only to look at the hull design to see that.

Note that all French main brands -Dufour, Jeanneau and Beneteau use the...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

I regret already to have posted here and if I continue on this last post is just not to mislead other members.

So, it is me that needs to evaluate Jeanneau? Do you know how many years ago they...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

I don't know if that is the case with bigger units but I doubt. The concept of contre moule is a complete mold of the bottom of the hull, there are no inspection holes it is a full structure without...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

Contre moule is exactly what you say. It is the cheapest way of doing a boat struture and is used by all French big manufacturers.

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

I don't see it that way. A well made cored hull is much superior to a monolitic hull. If you look among all good brands you will see that they all use cored hulls. The resistance to torsional forces...

Re: Rule 5 -- Is Single-Handing Illegal?

Most insurance companies will not cover an accident if the boat is single handed unless it is explicitly on the contract.

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

No doubt very cool but that is more than a compression post is a global reinforcement of all boat, including deck at that point. It is certainly also hugely expensive.

Re: Cruising Sailboats: a Dying Breed?

That's the same in the Mediterranean. Prices of marinas on the sailing season are skyrocketing while anchorages are full. It is not need to go back so many years: the diference to 15 years ago is...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

You are certainly right but it is worse than that. Mass market boats like these two are designed according what most people value when they chose a boat. It is there that most of the money is spent...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

I understand what you mean but the Swan 41 on its time was a very light boat too. Today it is still light specially if we consider the 4400kg ballast.

The Hanse 418 weights a little bit less than...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

I don't know about your boat but generally a compression post is much smaller than a mast, it can be chromed or it can be cylindrical. It does have the same interference on the interior. Imagine this...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

You are wrong about that. Only cruising boats where a greater importance is given to have a better saloon, without a mast intrusion, in detriment of an increase on mast performance and safety use...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

One considerably diference between the two boats is that the Jeanneau is considerably lighter than the Hanse, 9800 to 7860 kg. They are not built the same way but the built of the Jeanneau is of no...

Re: Hanse 418 or Jeanneau 410?

The only reason why boats are deck stepped is for interior space considerations. On racing boats or cruiser racers de masts are always keel stepped. Why do you think they do that if not because it is...

It remains if the negative...
