Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

One of the vulnerable bridges is the Golden Gate, at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. I would imagine that a cost/risk/benefits analysis would have to be done before any action would happen...

Re: dishes for cruising

Well, we have used heavy pottery dishes, for years. There has been some breakage. The downside has mainly been their weight. I'd replace them with the same, or add to them if there were a direct...

Re: Cut mast in half???

Hello, massnspace,

Jammer's told you the right of it. And I will add that you should be prepared for not very much actual sailing in rivers; it will be flukey. You might want to look at boats...

Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

I was present on the day an oil rig was taken out to sea from SF Bay, via the Golden Gate bridge. There were 6 huge ocean going tugs on it.

I don't think a tug could stop a ship going 8 knots,...

Re: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

I watched the last video posted here in CF.

*The port anchor was said to have been dropped.

*When the ship went dark, power to the rudder stopped; power to everything stopped, and it slowed. ...

Re: Sail Wear Maintenance

If the sails are dacron, they're done. Big boats generate big forces, and dacron isn't strong enough. When we replaced our mainsail, non-furling, on our boat, we were told if it were made of...

Re: Dodger Quotation

If one of you already sews, you should be able to copy the old one. And sometimes, there are 2nd hand fabrics available. Sunbrella doesn't retain its waterproofness very long, maybe 3-4 yrs. ...

Re: Who Makes the Best RIB

It is the Swift, made in Australia, that I think is the best. Really good powdercoat on the hulls, hypalon tubes.

Gemini uses the Swift hull, and light weight South African hypalon for the...

Re: How many spare ropes are enough?

Once, along time ago, Jim found a brand new 1/2" polyester double braid jib sheet in the dumpster at the marina, new enough to still be shiny. It had a small diesel spill on it. It got the soapy...

Re: 5-mos Cruising Pacific Mexico Q&A

Being in Mexico, if you don't have rudimentary Spanish, it is very difficult to find people to do repairs, but if you do, it is possible. Sometimes cabbies know. Sometimes you just have to ask...

Re: Jost Van Dyke Customs Shakedown

Who might be willing to discuss US Customs are non-US citizens who have cruised to the US and were or are under Customs Control. Personally, I was shocked at how tough they are on them. If...

Re: I think I’m back to square one…

Hi, Thomas,

I'm wondering where the water came from that has left what looks like salt deposits on the alternator, and rust on its pulley. Not a biggie, but something to ask yourself to see if...

Re: Jost Van Dyke Customs Shakedown

I'll add something really cranky here, which is that, if the OP's is a correct reflection of what happened, well, my skipper knew all this [stated above by <montanan>], and told me about it, before...

Re: Deck color

Ours are like Snow white for the smooth, and if you mixed 1/4 cloud white to the snow white for the non-skid. The non-skid parts used to be a light grey, like the cloud white.
The change to...

Re: Moody 49 lost on bar at Bahia del Sol, El Salvador

Interesting, that picture of the bar looks a lot deeper and more straightforward than the ones pictured above from different years by Google.

And of course, with it changing frequently, no...

Yes, Tupaia,

Our Insatiable II, to us and our friends, is I-2. I just timed it, and it took me 9 seconds. ...Fortunately, I've had a lot of practice with the phonetic alphabet, but it IS way...

Re: Simplicity: Yacht Owners Feared Dead After Escapees Recaptured (Grenada)

It kind of leaves Americans at a disadvantage, because some of the other British heritage nations have a different rule from what we grew up with. I grew up in California, where the law was that if...

Re: I think I’m back to square one…

Playing devil's advocate here, a bit:

If I were the seller, and I knew that the through hulls were good, I'd be pissed at your attitude. If the seller seems annoyed to you, I'd mark it down to...

Re: Advice Request: What Should I Focus on at Survey

Here's a link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/marine-survey-101-a-78671.html

It is pretty general, and not specific to the Saba 50, but it will give you a grounding in thinking that may...

Maybe it would help if I tell you what lines we have in our lazarette, so I will, in a moment. But first I want to say that as you replace worn line, you do tend to keep the old line for...

Re: Novice Sailor, looking for advice

Hi, NWNate,

Suggest you pick up a book about how to deal with electric stuff, and deal with your wiring. You'll possibly wind up with a few tools. So, don't cheap out on a multimeter, buy a...

Re: Feds Seek Info on Manatee Crime

The one in the photograph looked vulnerable to snagging on roots or rocks. My concern was physical interference, rather than battery life.

Re: Moody 49 lost on bar at Bahia del Sol, El Salvador

This is a very interesting and subtle point, Kettlewell: it almost seems to me as if what people think to themselves is something along the lines of "if he thinks he can do it safely enough, then...
